Why San Diego?

It just struck me. California has amazing cars, and LA is the car spotting mecca of the country. But San Diego, your cars are decidedly unremarkable. Why not more cool cars here?

Because they spent all their money on the house and street tacos.

Coming here to say basically this. Conversely, why is Alabama full of people driving M-B and BMW like they’re Honda and Toyota?

Cheap houses and low property taxes = easy conspicuous consumption.

Depends on where you are in San Diego. I used to live in Rancho Santa Fe, La Jolla, and Del Mar, and the cars there were very nice

La Jolla village area and Del Mar have some pretty crazy high-end stuff.

I see some cool stuff in the area where I work too (Sorrento Valley, where all the biotechs are). There’s a Valencia Orange BMW 1M parked at the office next door that I’ve been ogling lately.

I really love seeing the non-US cars (with Mexican plates) cruising around too.

So what are the young squids driving these days? In my Navy days you saw a lot of Jeeps and American muscle on base but that was a long time ago.

Because México.

Also, because SD is more about zip code than your ride (because commutes are relatively short). Very different from LA, where your car is the main social status indicator and something you spend more waking hours in than your house. A standard LA lifestyle involves living in a crappy or very distant place and driving a nice car.

But San Diego, you r cars are decidedly unremarkable.

Fixed it!

I love San Diego, but it is a bit unremarkable as a city. I actually love it because of how unremarkable it is! Many friends live there; Coronado sounds fun!

However I have one very small grippe with the USA, its actually the only reason why I wouldn’t live there; the system of measurements. Sure, I understand pounds, inches, Farenhiets, but I’ll be dammed before you catch me using them for anything work related!

I just wished Canada invaded you and imposed a strict usage of the S.I. system and also a maple syrup rich diet!

Not that ya’ll need more sugars or fats in your diets, but it’s the canadian touch that matters.

What always intrigued me was how separate SD County is from LA/OC despite sharing a border. I grew up in South Orange County, in Laguna, but rarely did we venture past San Clemente, and even that didn’t happen very often. My dad, who had his own consulting firm, didn’t do any business in SD County, even though it was closer than many of his clients in LA.

There is something else that separates SD from OC, and it’s more than that empty expanse of land fronting Camp Pendleton. For some unknown reason it’s a different world once you cross that county line, like you’ve been transported to a separate and unrelated state. Seriously bizarre...

That expanse of land fronting Camp Pendelton isn’t empty. Its filled with the crushed hopes and dreams of every recruit on Edson Range and the shattered souls of Marines up north in the SOI/Horno/San Mateo/Talega areas.

It’s the same thing that keeps great Mexican food from going north of the country line ;)

You must be in the wrong part of town or something. I don’t find there to be a significant difference in the ratio of cool cars in SD vs LA. Although LA’s population is nearly 4x SD’s so that’ll certainly impact perception.
