This is a great take! The Caymen might be the “real Porsche” of their inventory. The 911 is just like....fuck it’s way out of MOST people’s range. The Cayman is the drivers Porsche, the entry vehicle, the car they make that harkens back to days of yore.

Yes, but damn those are all some ugly wheels. They’re what I would expect to see on a Chrysler 300 circa 2007

Goodness no! I can’t afford one of those. I just agree.

It’s funny how the Cayman really has just taken over the 911’s role and the 911 is getting more and more into what the 928 was meant to be a sporty GT car, rather than a out right sports car. Now they need a new 944. It’s not the only example of model bloat, but it’s a damn good one.
Also see BMW 3-4 Series, and Honda Civic. Both of which needed entirely new models to take their place because they got too big and too nice to fill their original roles.

Nice post. I’ve always disregarded the 4 cylinder Boxster/Cayman for some superficial pretentious bullshit, even though I love the 951 and 968. I’ve always thought they were pretty, but after watching videos, I love how aggressive the exhaust is and the car truly blows away the modern 911s. With the lack of heritage (disregarding the 718 nomenclature) it’s the closest thing to a blank canvas they have and is their vehicle for more expressive design language. Deviating from the 911 only pisses off the purists.

I just don’t like the facelifted 718s. The engine, the little thing on the back that says Porsche...I want to like it, but I just don’t.

I think I’d go for a 987.2 spec’d like this one. not as good looking I agree. https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=477110460&zip=60022&referrer=%2Fcars-for-sale%2Fsearchresults.xhtml%3Fzip%3D60022%26startYear%3D2009%26sortBy%3DderivedpriceDESC%26maxPrice%3D40000%26incremental%3Dall%26firstRecord%3D0%26endYear%3D2019%26modelCodeList%3DCAYMAN%26makeCodeList%3DPOR%26searchRadius%3D0%26trimCodeList%3DCAYMAN%257CS%26transmissionCodes%3DMAN&startYear=2009&numRecords=25&maxPrice=40000&firstRecord=0&endYear=2019&modelCodeList=CAYMAN&makeCodeList=POR&searchRadius=0&makeCode1=POR&modelCode1=CAYMAN

Are you kidding me? that is puzzling. Interesting... but puzzling.
Greatest Boxster/Cayman body style, last with the proper engine choice, a flat-6... especially S/GTS.... granted those are probably not in the 30K range... but even a base 981 is gorgeous, and properly flat-6 powered.
I like the 718 smoked tail lights... but otherwise the 718 changes from 981 were lateral to slightly less attractive, like the wide flat front air intake grille area.
