Audi A5 Sportback: $47,950

BMW 430i: $55,800

Buick Regal: $31,945

Kia Stinger: $44,195

Any liftbacks in the Canadian market that I’m missing? Because, to me, the Arteon seems like a lot of coin for the brand it comes from and for the market it competes in.

The VW Arteon is a more stylish VW Passat.

And worth every penny in my books. Tes it’s more expensive than the Passat but it’s better looking, more practical with the liftback tailgate, etc...

VW has been pricing their vehicles too high for quite some time. They’re always dancing with the idea that they’re a near-premium brand (see the Phaeton, the CC, price tag on a Touurreggg).

But I will say that the VW looks better than the A5.

Unfortunately, VW has one hell of an identity crisis. “We’re the people’s car, who makes the Beetle and the Golf and Jetta (which had rear drums for a long time)! Would you like to spend $50k on a sedan, or $60k for an SUV from a company that just recently lied to its customers about the abilities of its products?”

In the U.K. the Arteon is from £30-40,000 while the A5 Sportback is £30-50,000. So while it comes in at the top end of the Passat it fits in the lower end of the A5 Sportback.

It also has 85 litres more luggage capacity.

I think there pricing is probably trying to recuperate some of the money spent to put it through federal testing and import tariffs.

Well, they can achieve incredible things! I wouldn’t doubt for a second that the Arteon has as good a leather as any Audi! I guess that brand stigma is a bigger issue here in North American than in Europe where VW could sell Phaetons and Touaregs all day long....

To double down, that chassis goes from the Polo to the Arteon, the A5's goes from the A4 to the Urus. I know what one I’d pick.

Why yes! the MLB platform certainly exists! Personally I would do the same choice as you mentioned, buying MLB over MQB!

However, making an MLB car is more expensive than an MQB car, the Audi A5 that CB points out is probably the cheapest version, given that the Arteon is going to be VW’s north american flagship, I suspect that it will come only with the potent, 280hp 2.0l TSI and AWD. The 2.0 incidentally finds itself detuned to 252hp in the A5!

I akin the Arteon to the Lexus ES and the A5 to the IS

The ES is based on the Camry platform and it is cheaper than the IS engine by engine.

If we configured the Arteon and the A5 with the same engines in their most basic trims in the Spanish configurator (the 190hp 2.0 TDI FWD in both) the A5 comes in at about 2500 euros more expensive. The most expensive petrol versions of both (non S5 tho); the 2.0 quattro S line, and the 2.0 4motion R-line, have a price gap of almost 10,000 Euros!

I may remind you that the audi still has a detuned version, but nothing a quick ECU flash can’t change! specially when talking about VW’s 2.0 engine.

But most consumers might not know that, and we need to remind ourselves that to many the ES is a great Lexus! They don’t care if its a transversely mounted engine,front wheel drive car! So I can totally see a place for the Arteon in the ranks of the near-luxury segment! Yet we need to remind ourselves that the Canadian pricing probably refers to an Arteon that will give you a mighty bang for buck.

So Its OK for me, I think it’s better suited a tier below the A5 because of the MQB vs MLB thing we just analyzed, but hey, the Buick and the Stinger have nothing to do in that segment either! Those are cars with a great bang/buck ratio and not for true blue blooded consumers that would scoff such propositions.

The Arteon is much more attractive than the A5. That’s the extent of my opinion on the matter.
