I had a lot of unexpected maintenance over the last year with the Passat, be it both the PCV Valve and the Water Pump failing together, or the motor mounts going kaputt. So I’m thinking about selling it. Please help!
As some of you might know by now, I usually but down as much as I feel comfortable with and then finance the rest, almost always 70% down and the 30% left in finance. It keeps the payments low, the interest low and helps if I want to get rid of the car early.
The Passat is in superb condition, I treated that car unbelievably well and have all the paperwork, invoices and immaculate interior, paint and wheels to prove it. The leather in the interior was conditioned twice, I polished the paint once every 6 months and the wheels have no scuffs right now.
But I still pine for something newer and with a warranty, preferably a small lux sedan.
The 3 series drove great, but the interior was far lacking when compared the Passat, it was also far less comfortable.
The C-Class had an amazing interior, but at my price range and the options available to us here in Brazil the engine is the 1.6 slow with tiny wheels.
And the new A4s are still too expensive to justify and the older A4s are basically my Passat with a CVT Multitronic gearbox, oil consumption issues and less interior space.
The Volvo V60 R-Design leads the way, the T6 makes a comfortable 300Hp and can be had in wagon form, but it has been discontinued, so no warranty.
Should I just keep the Asspat? Seeing how much effort and money I already spent on it?

Why do you have two cars? Can’t you just use the Peugeot for everything?

Man, I would enjoy that paid off car for a while. Nice job keeping it that clean - I try and keep mine clean, but I already have some curb rash on 2 wheels after only 1 year of ownership. :(
What about a Lexus IS350?

There are laws in latin america that limit car usage. In his case cars rest once a week depending on plate number.
Here in Mexico if you want to drive daily you can either have a well maintained vehicle or give the inspection officer 10 bucks.

You just bought a car! But the passat does depreciate at a rate that perhaps would make it better for you to get a new one.
I guess that if I were you I’d look at something more...Korean.
Lets face it, you’re looking at imports anyway, so why not get a very nice Stinger with the 2.0 motor. We have the 3.3 and it’s total overkill.

We don’t get the Stinger here, at least for now. Unlike Hyundai, who is making a killing in Brazil, Kia can’t even move enough SUV/Crossovers to justify being here, especially since they don’t have cheap small cars.

Certainly, it is a pretty car. Those toyota engines are bulletproof too!
Can’t vouch for Lexus actually being in Brazil thought.

I would definitely keep it, as ($maintenance + $0 car payment) is probably still going to be way cheaper than payments on a new car plus whatever hit you take on trade-in + new down payment. Getting the Volvo is definitely not going to avoid the maintenance hit. Even if nothing breaks, Volvo maintenance down there is probably not cheap (my mom has one in Colombia).
I’m surprised you didn’t find the 3-series to be more comfortable, as F30 are quite comfortable. The main advantage the A4 has is a longitudinal platform instead of your Passat’s transverse layout, but that only comes into play once you add powerful engines or all-wheel-drive.

The IS350 F-Sport is a nice option, but man those are tough to find, Lexus has a very small play here in Brazil, there are like 2 or 1 dealerships in Sao Paulo, my city with 11 million people. They have tons of NXs available, never any cars.

Hold up.... Y’all don’t get the stinger?
grey market import from Chile or Uruguay!!
More realistically.... I think that a good choice would be the new 2.0 Accord.... Or perhaps if you want a luxurious car, you can’t do bad with another VW; the arteon stands out!
Or maybe we’re bringing cars to a SUV fight; a CPO Range Rover evoque comes with ford-reliability in it’s four cylinder 240hp motor!

My mom had an Evoque, a B3+ armored Evoque, I really liked that car. But I think most CPO ones are still kinda beaten, I’m very annoying about interior blemishes and the luck, plust the stigma that the Evoque carries.
Not really a fan of Japanese cars expect Lexus and Subaru. I will consider the Legacy or Outback.
The Arteon is probably going to be massively expensive here, since the normal Passat is nearing $55k here.

Holy shit!
My friend Joel has a b4 sport and it has worked like a champ for years... Range Rovers take bulletproofing quite well.
I do know you don’t bulletproof your vehicles... So that special evoque feature might be worthless for you!
I wouldn’t buy a cvt Subaru ever, despite loving the brand otherwise... But lexus remains a good choice as arl says...
Ive always been told that the best financial move with a car is waiting until the depreciation curve bottoms out; that way your ownership costs are lower overall.
I can’t say I’d buy the volvo though... It looks like it’s close to being refreshed so that it looks more like the v90 and other new cars of their lineup.

Is your passat armored? How is the resell value for something like the passat? I actually really like the Mondeo wagon, but I know they don’t sell those in BR. What about a C estate? I think it’d fit well into SP street parking

My little car is getting a 11mm armoring. For muggers you know... But no b3+ affair.

Yeah, quite used to it, my parents always had armored cars, I had an armored old RR Vogue at some point but didn’t follow up on it. The interior always squeaks and I never had a problem with muggers.
But my parents are crazy about it. They have a E250 (Dad) and S550 (Mom) both on B3+. They keep badgering me “You wear your nice watches on these cars with clear windows, do you want to die?”
But eh

I think his cars are well maintained, it’s that certain license plates are not allowed to drive depending on your plate number and day of the week. This is to keep a rotating % of cars off the road everyday. Alot of municipalities around the world do that, but not anywhere here in the US.
It’s usually compensated for with a 2nd car and/or good public transit

Well, I guess it’s a step forward.
I’m not ready to leave the safety net of polycarbonate. But it is, mostly, hypocritical.
I bike everywhere and I commute often with a friend that has a VW CC; not a cheap car by any means. I don’t feel unsafe then. She also always wears a very fancy bilgary (0r however it’s spelt) watch.
What the saleswoman at the armourer told me was that “You don’t look like someone that would attract muggers” because of course I am not. I never wear watches, I never wear brand jeans or Gucci shirts... I am basically a copy-paste student of engineering. I dress like shit! However, I am, as my parents tell me “not good at handling bad situations” I know my life is worth more than my stupid Mac Book, but I might try to flee a mugger and well, they have guns and I do not.
However, whenever I have to leave my comfort zone or whenever I see bikes slowly cruising by me, I feel unsafe, at least on my own. I don’t need any added stress on my life right now, but I do know that Kia will be my last car with armoring (even if its partial) because I’ll have to face this irrational fear my parents instilled in me eventually. I’m just not ready yet.

I have to admit that bikers still instill fear on me, or pedestrians crossing streets between the cars.
My heart races whenever someone offering free newspapers or panflets on street lights knocks on my window and I’m distracted.
I still feel a lot safer inside their Mercedi, especially the S550, but I learned to deal with that fear, especially since I don’t really care all that much for myself.
They fear the same with me, my first reaction is never to comply or be quiet, much like when I’m driving, my instinct is to tell everybody to fuck of and drive off. I would never let a mugger take my watches, Macbook or car without a fight or resistance.

I dunno, I’ve never been mugged thankfully, but i’ve seen some people take a lot of interest in my car until they see the thick borders of the windows.
When it comes to my own mortality, well... i’ve just discovered it. I often do off roading in SXS and ATVs and whenever I revisit the trails I’d thrash three or four years back, man... I’d be doing maybe 30km/h less now and often think “I was crazy Its amazing I’m not dead!”

Certainly Oppo’s resident Brazilian attorney keeps his cars in great working order, but the regulation regarding maintenance I mention is for Mexico!
Mr.Citroen Won’t Start could have the least polluting car on the planet, but Sao Paulo’s regulation is for congestion, not pollution. Assuming all things are equal, 20% of registered cars are kept off the road on weekdays (assuming it works on a two digits per day affair)
The verification process keeps 30% of cars registered in Mexico City and adjacent municipalities in Mexico State (two very different places, I promise!) out of the roads every weekday! people complain it’s not enough, so they made the law more strict.
Whenever there’s an environmental contingency (these happen around march) we default to “contingencia ambiental” which means that more cars are taken off the road, factories aren’t allowed to work, etc.
Phase one bans all “dos” vehicles and restrictions on plates depending on number (alike Sao Paulo) apply to all cars without regard to sticker (hybrids and electrics are exempt of this)
Phase two bans all “dos” and “uno” vehicles and also bans half of the cars in the city from working depending on whether the last digit is an odd number or an even one (alike what paris has done before)

Thank you for letting me know. I know there are A LOT more things to improve down there before roads, but it seems kind of ridiculous that they have to have that in place. Traffic is very bad in metro Atlanta, for instance, and everyone has cars.

Too many people commute by car for that to happen... Your public transportation is pretty bad too! We’re going that way in Mexico City, with 68% of people going by car. Hoy No Circula has been challenged in court as a classit thing because to many it’s not a lot.
Although NYC is trying to get a congestion zone, which is probably the closest thing.

No, just a plain vanilla Passat Variant without sunroof.
We don’t get the Mondeo Wagon, just the Fusion built in Mexico. The C is an interesting choice, but it has the same ailments as the regular C, small engine, low power and tiny wheels.

It’s not that the 3 is uncomfortable, it was just less conformable than the Passat, the leather wasn’t as soft, the plastics felt harder and the leather on the steering wheel was just a bit weird.

Since we lack Alfa Romeo, Cadillac, Infiniti and Acura, the only few other options I can think are these:
Honda Accord V6
Toyota Camry V6
Ford Fusion 2.0 Ecoboost
Chrysler 300C 3.6
