So as you may or may not recall a 2017 Chevy Malibu has been part of our lives now since November. The car has been really great! The platform is wonderful and really makes me look forward to the new Regal line. The only down side I really have with the Malibu is it needs more power, we should have gotta the 2.0 turbo.... Which also may have helped with my new growing disdain for the fucking thing. Power aside I’m super not happy with the 1.5lt at all. So two weeks ago I make a 6 hour run, turn around and head home to help move a buddy back home post break up with his GF. the car performed swimmingly the way down and for the way back, until we are in the last 45 min of the drive. The worst part of the drive too as it was now dark and snowing and I had been at the wheel for around 11 hours or so at this point in the day. When all of a sudden I get a check engine light, a horrid drone to the exhuast and a total loss of power. I was doing at 73mph so rpm’s were right about 2700 or so. I rev up and it just has no balls. pull off high way and it sounds like the turbo doesn’t even spool when bringing up the RPM’s during quick sprints in txting pull off. WTF.
I limp home and we take it to the dealer next day, which considering the thing has less that 5k on it is super annoying! to further the annoyance it having been snowing when i got home we parked over snow, the next day when i moved the car I saw a small bright green spot that was directly under the engine. But wait it gets better. they take 2 days to return it. Claim CEL was never on but the ECU showed an over heating warning had occurred. Meaning the ECU over heated, not the engine. HOW THE FUCK DOES AN ECU OVER HEAT GOING 73MPH DOWN THE HIGH WAY IN 20 DEGREE WEATHER?? OH and they say there is no signs of a coolant leak. they claim they did nothing to fix the car. How ever looking in the engine bay I can see areas that looked much cleaner than the rest around the exhaust/turbo and coolant res.. What are the odds they fixed something that is a known issue but didn’t want to report it? also still HOW DOES AN ECU OVER HEAT IN THE WINTER???
FUCK THIS CAR...
ps: still want a GS or tour X... I’m a glutton for punishment..

Don’t some of those suffer from excessive blow by that causes the pistons to get totally fucked?

HOW DOES AN ECU OVER HEAT IN THE WINTER???
Not sure where the ECU is in the Malibu, but it can often be inside the cabin, either under the dash or in a kick panel.
So basically, driving 11 hours in winter with the heater constantly on is probably the worst case scenario for the ECU. It is a computer after all, constantly blowing hot air on it or near it is probably not ideal.

I had one as a rental car once . I actually liked, although I was a little disappointed with the fuel economy. Thought it might have been better with a larger N/A I4.

Yeah, perhaps. though for probably 9 hours the temps were in the 40's and 50's so the heat wasn’t really on. it was just when i got close to home it got cold.

not likely, the 2.0 is rare, probably even rarer in rental form. the MPG isn’t great. across the 793 mi I drove that day I averaged only 34.6 MPG all high way. All with cruise on doing an average of 70MPH. virtually no stop n go. same drive in my ‘09 Impala nets an average of 32.4 and that’s much heavier and has a 3.5 v6. the other part that sucks is it’s tiny tiny gas tank. I had to fill up 3 times on the tip. THREE! once before I left, once on the way down and again on the way back. I think it’s only 12 gallons. needs a 15 gallon. 3 pit stops in 793 miles is ridiculous! I can get about 550 per tank in the impala on such a drive. once before I leave and once on the say back. Adding in a 3rd pit stop adds about an extra 30 min to the drive. blah!

I can’t explain the overheating thing, but the small bright green spot may have been due to salty snow melting from between the exhaust and heat shield. The salty snow allows a chemical reaction to happen between the heat shield and the exhaust that results in zinc oxide to form and drip onto the ground.

I’m sure GM tests for hot and cold extremes, but maybe you found one scenario that is difficult to test for.
Or maybe you got one with a defective computer. Or maybe it’s a one time problem that you’ll never see again.

So I guess it would need an even bigger engine that a 2.0L. I was saying that I wouldn’t have bought the 1.5L and would have instead preferred a larger N/A engine.
