Oppo- I have a wedding in Charlotte in May, and my gf and I are going to make a mini vacation/roadtrip out of it. We’ll be leaving Pittsburgh Friday, and going to Columbus to stay for a quick stop overnight and then heading to Nashville early Saturday (staying until Monday). We’re then going to spend Monday-Friday in Asheville. Other than tail of the dragon, any other recommendations are where we should stay/what we should see? I know we want to hit up some breweries in Asheville, and some country music things in Nashville, but we dont have anything else planned.

Nashville - If I’m in town, I can be at the Lane Motor Museum Saturday afternoons or Sunday mornings depending on my wifes schedule. Definitely go Midtown if you’re going out. Just a taste of Broadway is all you need.

Asheville- hit up Bremari(for most beers) and wicked weed(for sours) and the Top of the Monk for bourbons. Don’t be weirded out by the “joining a club” thing. It’s a way of getting around regulations around town. There are a lot of fun places in there.

Lots of fun stuff to do in Asheville - mostly brewery-related like you mentioned. Since it’ll be warm then, you can rent a tube and float down the French Broad, and that goes right by New Belgium. Highland Brewing is very chill with their rooftop and meadow. Lots of great food there - if you’re doing downtown breweries, I almost always grab lunch at Farm Burger (there’s also a parking deck right around the corner (believe it’s part of Aloft) from there that seems to usually have spots available). If you like BBQ, 12 Bones is a great spot.

It’s just fun to walk around downtown, lots to see and do. Biltmore can be fun if you enjoy seeing a massive home and walking through the rooms and grounds. A trip out to Sierra Nevada is a must - the place is like Disneyland for beer. If you want to do a tour, reserve a spot as soon as possible, they fill up immediately.

Fun driving in the area - Tail of the Dragon is fun, Cherohala Skyway is right nearby as is the Copperhead Loop. If you head north there’s the Diamondback and NC221 near Grandfather Mountain is nice. If you want something a little more relaxing but scenic, the Blue Ridge Parkway can be a nice respite.

Nashville is great, Asheville is IMHO not quite deserving of the hype. 12 Bones is some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had and that’s after spending most of my life in the South. Great breweries and restaurants everywhere, but it’s also overrun with pretentious yuppies and hipsters to the point where it loses a lot of charm. Again, IMHO.

If you can add a couple extra days between the cities and not try to do the whole drive in one push, let me know. I think some of the coolest destinations in the Easter US are between those two cities.

Asheville - If you like to hike, I recommend driving out the Blue Ridge Parkway to the Art Loeb Trail at Black Balsam Knob. Great views, and fairly easy hiking.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Black+Balsam+Knob/@35.3278824,-82.8918073,14z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x8859a04f5a826e87:0xeb8a04c8f8530f42!8m2!3d35.3278842!4d-82.8742977!5m1!1e4

There are also numerous waterfalls to enjoy, many very close to the roads. And there are a number of great places to eat in Asheville. If you want any ideas, I’ll be happy to share.

Also, if you want to visit the Biltmore estate, definitely schedule a time in advance to go through the house, and get the audio tour. Without the audio tour you won’t really appreciate it. And while there you may wish to do the Land Rover off road experience, I found that to be fun.

My wife and I go to Zambra every time we’re in Asheville. It’s tapas and it’s wonderful. Lots of breweries. The LaZoom tour is kind of cheesy but fun. I’d get a groupon for that though. I wouldn’t pay full price for that one. There are so many things to do there that it’s hard to pick one thing. Lots of breweries, stuff downtown, etc.

I wasn’t thinking of playoff tickets. However I also didn’t read deep enough to see “in May” either, so...

Still. In Nashville, in May, price be damned that all the more reason to go. Gotta do it at least once.

Local BBQ places

and if you can see them I recommend, Lost Dog Street Band. They are based out of the Nashville area

When in Nashville, consider Bearded Iris Brewing. It’s especially recommended if you like hazy, Northeast-style IPA’s.

Care to list some more info on “Joining the club”. Is taht like a “pay 5 to join the club and get a free pint so we can call ourselves a private establishment for members only?”

Exactly. It’s pretty funny. By the time I left Asheville last time I had like 5 membership cards. Nashville doesn’t have any of that funny business.

Id be down for hiking but my gf may take some convincing. While I’d love to do all the roads, we’re looking to stay put once there as we’ll have over 24 hours of driving over our week and a half trip.

We’re fluid on our dates as of right now, just trying to figure out how long we want to spend in each place. I’m hoping Asheville wont be TOO bad during the week, but who knows.

I like them as long as they arent a brewery that ONLY does that style. I like some variety and get bored drinking 4 or 5 different NEIPA (Dancing Gnome in pittsburgh is a great example, always have 4-6 NEIPAs on tap, and if they do a stout or porter its gone in days)

Thanks! I dont know how much extra driving we’re going to do as we’re already spending a day of our 10 day trip in the car total, but we’ll definitely look into it.

I’m 100% ok with that as it gives a cool memento from the trip as well.

I’ll keep ya updated on when we’re in Nashville. Thats more her leg of the trip for the country music, so I’m not going to push TOO much car stuff on her.

The nice thing with the Lane is its not a normal car museum. Everyone finds joys in cars that are literally 3'x4' and cars that are driven by giant propellers. My wife doesn’t mind the 1-2 a year that I take her there and she could care less about cars unless they are comfy and fast(like the ISF).

If you’re flexible, the Smoky Mountains are worth a couple days. Dollywood is a fantastic theme park, especially for the price (makes me regret Disney all the time). And if you like outdoors stuff, the trailheads in the national park are almost all near the road. Entry is totally free. Biggest mountains in the East and some of the views rival the Rockies. And amazing driving roads everywhere around there.

Alternatively, Chattanooga is very similar to Asheville, but IMO cleaner and nicer. Stay downtown, lots to do within a short walk, and the road from there to Asheville keeps you off the interstate and on much more interesting roads.

Just throwing it out there — I have kids and flexibity is not part of our travel plans at the moment, but I would avoid rushing that part of the trip.

Also, Charlotte is surprisingly clean and interesting — and worth a day or so by itself.
