My wife wants a crossover for her next car. My rational side was considering a Cx-5 and the like. But then I started searching for Isuzu Axioms. Soonafter, I found myself looking up this: the 9-4x
I have seen one in person, ever. I am aware that it is a stupid-rare rebagded Cadillac. A minor collision would almost certainly total it (like an unfortunate Oppo who just lost his 9-5). However, I kind of like it for some reason. And if you don’t get the Aero, they’re not too expensive.
My wife likes pretty much all the crossovers. From the Rogue to the CRV. Still, in the same way I was drawn to an uncommon hatchback, I would enjoy the novelty of co-owning an uncommon CUV.

I like them. Much better looking than the SRX they are based off of. If she’s set on a crossover, I say go for it.
You might also be able to find a Saturn Vue Redline for a decent price if that’s something you’d be interested at looking into.

I really like the CX-5, and I’m trying to talk my sister into one, however I feel like the quality isn’t that great. My neighbor bought one for his kid to drive to school everyday, and he’s always complaining about the interior bits falling apart and stuff.

Bad space crab! Shouldn’t you be looking at RX 300s and the like?

Remember, this is bailout era GM, so the Mazda will have a better interior.

A couple years ago my wife wanted a 3rd row SUV, our finances were shot, but she absolutely had to have a 3rd row SUV. We picked up a used Acura MDX for way more than we should have paid for it (financed), in the first year of ownership I replaced the timing chain, all the fluids, a complete brake job, and two tires. I hate that fucking car. But if in two years I can get something else that’s not an overpriced shitbox, I will be happy as can be.

Nothing else from Toyota that tickles her fancy? And the RX has been around for quite a while, there must be reasonably priced examples that aren’t completely worn out.

One time a project manager pulled up in a ‘15 MDX. My parents having owned two, I asked him how he liked his. He was frustrated by the expensive tires and pricy service theAWD system. Said he bought it for something nice and reliable but felt like it was too much to keep it running for what it was.

Oh, I forgot I also replaced the motor-mounts, and the top power-steering hose (the one that requires dropping the sub-frame). If I’d have known what kind of nightmare a Japanese pseudo-luxury SUV would be, I’d have looked for either an Audi or Lexus.

Ah the 9-4x. As you mentioned, they are extraordinarily rare (547 made). I can tell you that a single collision WILL total it.
If that doesn’t deter you, I would be aware of the fact that the haldex awd system requires a lot of love, they like to break too often and require basically a yearly servicing.
If that doesn’t deter you, avoid the 2.8T, they eat coils and I can tell you from owning a 2.8T, it’s not fun to replace. They also stretch their timing chain (I didn’t keep mine long enough to experience that)
If that doesn’t deter you either then go for it

She does not like bigly SUVs. Nor do I. Run of the mill Rogues, CRVs, are more her game.

Also, those were the reason why I didn’t continue with a Saab. Still love them though and will forever be in my heart

I was just thinking a Toyota V8 would probably keep running well after we’re dead. Rav4, then?

We love our CX-5. We have had it since December 2012 and the only issue it has ever given us is a few random transmission fault codes one day that were corrected by doing a TCM software update at the dealer. Other than that, in 51,000 miles, I’ve only done tires and brakes. And a recall for the strut mounts for the hatch. Ours never had an issue but I had the recall done anyway.
