Peugeot 402 because looking up cop memes made me have a sad

I haven’t got a moving violation in... :tries to do math: like 13 years? Managed to get one today and another ticket “while I was there”.

First one was... my fault. I got pulled over for having expired tags. Hey, when you have four vehicles I guess sometimes you just forget. Unfortunate, but true. Luckily the late fee was only $16 on the reg and I can get the ticket waived if I go to the courthouse.

The second one was... also my fault. I gassed it to make it past a glob of traffic and allegedly was clocked at 84 in a 65. That seems high, but in either case he wrote the ticket for 9 over, which is umm... likely. The Volvo has buckets of torque, even in 6th.

My only real butt hurt here is what are these warnings people speak of ? I’m polite, curious, and respectful and every single time I’ve been pulled over I get a ticket.

I’ve been pulled over:

14 years ago - Going 55 in a 35. Totally just wasn’t paying attention. Ticket

13 years ago - Going like... 55 in a 50 zone? This one was a little meh. I got clocked from maybe a quarter mile away through a fence and he attested I was going some ludicrous speed. I think he just saw an easy mark (young kid, nice car) and made some shit up. Ticket.

1 year ago - Dealer forgot to put temp plates on the Disco and I didn’t think about it. Got pulled over in Utah and got a ticket for “improper display of plates” and officer dickbag stole the California plates off my car. Ticketed (and I don’t really care for Utah anymore).

Today - As described.

Meanwhile I had a friend that were pulled over drunk with expired tags, licence, and no insurance. Got off with just getting picked up by his parents.

I had a frie- ok same friend literally get chased back to his house by a police helicopter and still not get a ticket.

(Sidenote: he has his shit together now...)

I’ve gotten loads of warnings. It’s a three-step process:

1. Be white.

2. Be polite.

3. Admit to the officer they’re right.

Oh yeah, I’ve gotten out of two simply for having my Dept of Transportation badge visible in the car.

in my state, if you have a good record the judge will suspend the violation, but if you get another one within a certain amount of time they will tack those points back on. It’s called probation before judgement or something like that. Might be worth a look.

84 in a 65 is acceptable IMO. It’s normal on the major roads here for traffic to flow at 80 in a 65. Speed limit laws need overhauled...we aren’t driving sleds with drum brakes and 90mph top speeds as most cars were when the limits were set. Arcaic laws to keep the revenue flowing.

lol opening my wallet wide enough so they can see my EMT license when i pull out my drivers license. it worked like a charm. i once got a speeding ticket knocked down from an 84 in a 65 which would have been a 200 dollar fine, to a seatbelt violation which was a 60 dollar fine mainly because i was wearing a chicago cubs hat

In my experience, it has to do with whether or not they are out specifically to issue citations. If that is the officer’s job that day, and he stops you, then you are getting a ticket. If he’s got somewhere else to be and is in a good mood, you might get a warning.

My brother is a deputy sheriff for our county, and I have an EOW bumper sticker for one of our local fallen officers on the back glass of the car, haven’t gotten a citation in years. (Not that that is what those stickers are for mind you)

Get a traffic attorney. Worth ever penny. He’ll get it dropped completely or plead down to some legal fallacy (don’t kill me for using wrong terminology, law Oppos). My wife got her California-stop ticket reduced to a parking infraction (thus off her record). I’ve fought several tickets that were bogus. One when I got ran off the road and the other car fled (WSP told me, “Well, you were probably going to fast.”) and another where I was rear-ended and they lied to the cop and said I hit them via magic.

I guess in my case I was in the right unlike youuuuuuu but details details!

I’ll guess your friend has money/political/law enforcement connections. Because this is a meritocracy and everyone is treated equally, of course.

Get a FOP sticker or some kind of LEO-related plate.

Mmhmm, so a strong performance on step 3 overcame shortfalls on step 1? I’ll allow it.

I’ve been pulled over twice. First one floored it downhill through a speed trap, my fault. I was 17 then. Ten years later, I made a right on red a little too close for the cops liking. I thought for sure I was getting a ticket. He told me I was going to get in an accident unless I slowed it down. No ticket that time.

Also helps to have a clean record. I’ll pay alot of money to keep points off my licence.

I was riding with a friend in Vermont when he got pulled over for 74 in a 50. Granted that is a bit fast but middle of nowhere country roads, kind of expected. He did get a ticket (thanks to the NJ plates I imagine) even with a PBA card but instead of a ticket for 24 over, it was instead written as 60 in a 50. It seems that the “warning” is sometimes just lessening the ticket. If it’s actually something like 5-10 over getting let go with an actual warning is more likely. I’ve been pulled over in my Miata for doing 70 in a 55 while passing someone on a single lane per direction road. Let go with a warning although he made sure to check I had a front plate to try and get me on that. Funny because I had also just replaced my seats with bright red Brides so I was a prime target for throwing the book at from my perspective.

I’ve been told that also works with a CCW licence, but I feel like that has a 50/50 chance of backfiring.

In my experience WJalopy ’s “be polite” advice is good (can’t personally speak for the accuracy of “be white” since I’ve never been anything else, but it probably doesn’t hurt), but “polite” means a very specific thing here: you can be businesslike, but make a show of being considerate of all the concerns that make the officer’s end of the interaction stressful. Pull over in a place that’s safe for the officer to walk up to the car. Turn off the car and put your keys on the roof (yes, even keyless-go) so there’s no risk you’ll take off as soon as he gets out of his car. Leave your hands on the wheel until the officer asks for your paperwork. Before you reach for anything, tell the officer what you’re reaching for and where it is—e.g. “my license is in my wallet, which is in my back pocket—I’m going to reach back and grab it” and “my registration is in the glove box with the manual, I’m going to reach over there now.” This probably shouldn’t really be necessary, but it’s the world we live in, and it’s also a good way to not get shot. Make it easy on the officer, he or she might make it easy on you.

This. I had an investigator let me off with a warning when I did a e-brake turn across double yellow late at night... Because he was an investigator on his once a month patrol and didn’t want to have to spend more time dealing with tickets

I had a string of five warnings in a row, but that ended with a speeding ticket on the sixth pullover. I’m always nice/polite/respectful/honest. I also go out of my way to make things easier and less stressful for the cop. I roll down my windows, turn on my done light, shut the ingnition off, toss the keys on the dash, and put my hands palm out on the wheel.

Nonetheless, luck is a huge element in receiving a warning. All five of those warnings were given to me by cops who seemed like they were in a bad mood, and I was an annoyance. That ticket was given to me by without a doubt the friendliest and most pleasant officer to ever pull me over.

I got a speeding ticket less than a year ago, wasn’t in my uniform but I had my military ID. I was hoping when I gave that to him he would just give me a warning. Didn’t help haha.
