I was watching old episodes with the fam last night, and the original General Mayhem one came up. The one where they dug the ‘68 Charger shell out, bought a motor home, and sawzall’d the 440 out of it and shoved it in the car and went hooning in the dirt.

It reminded me I need to find a 6.0L donor car for my Trans Am, and I’ve been looking at school buses, box vans, and apparently police cars on Co-Part all morning.

That police cruiser could be such a sleeper out of it’s black and white color scheme. Even car people wouldn’t give it a second look in all black with some different wheels it’d just blend in with all the Impalas and Malibus.

I am super conflicted on taking out the Pontiac engine in my Firebird. My car is not numbers matching and I am cool with that because why the hell would I want a Yellow Bird with a 3.8. I currently have a 400 in mine. I have a Hot Rod magazine from 5ish years ago where they built a 468 stroker motor with some new to the market canted valve heads that I am interested in doing someday. I am all for swapping a 6.0 into my truck though. I want to have choo choo noises.

That’s my problem: too many choices. Fortunately for me I have an olds engine and pontac crate engines are ridiculous to get, which makes that decision for me.

I’m waiting to see what something like this goes for.... low miles, slight body damage, fly down with a couple rolls of duct tape, seal it up, and drive it back home. How bad could it be?

Be careful with police duty l77 motors,

I assume you’d change the cam anyway, but if those spend a long time idling they’ll eat the cam. (My car apparently had the cam replaced at 26k(!?!))

And 2011 cars don’t have an hour meter so look at those in later year cars as a check

I’ve been looking mostly at low mileage vans, but if the right Caprice/G8/GTO came up I wouldn’t be opposed. 99% sure I’m going with a hotter cam, but probably little else. It has to SOUND right, but I’m not concerned with adding power or taking away any reliability.

Cam issues aside, I’d go l77 before I went ly6

+65hp, aluminum block, and car intake

(GTOs have an ls2, while the G8/Caprice have the l76/l77 which is ls3 based so if you did have hci intentions make note of that)

As much as I’d love an aluminum LS I don’t think its practical at this point, especially for the price premium. The car came with an iron lump in the front and I’m only building a cruiser, not a canyon car, so handling/weight isn’t a top priority.

I can always change it up, later.
