Last night someone posted a picture of an AR-15 with a warning for students at 2 local high schools not to go to school today. One is where my son goes to school. They are keeping the schools open, but posting police officers on campus.
My wife and I agreed that his ass is staying home where he can’t get shot. Not exactly what I planned for when I had kids. What would you do if you were me?

I’d keep him home. It is unlikely that anything would happen, but you’d never forgive yourself if something did.

My town also had a social media threat last night.
The were still investigating at midnight, and ended up closing all the schools in the town today.
What do you tell a six year old when they ask you why they can’t go to school today?

I would have done the same thing. My son’s high school had an announced lockdown drill yesterday. They usually aren’t announced, but in light of what happened in FL, they didn’t want to freak out the kids. The security at our HS is a joke. The main entrance is unlocked, and anybody who wanted to could just walk in. When I visit schools in a neighboring district, I have to ring a doorbell and get buzzed in, presumably after they at least look to see who I am. Not foolproof, but certainly better than an open door.
What happened to you is more than likely a prank. But the days of complacency are over. I assume they know who made the post. They should be charged with making terroristic threats and locked up.

I would mail bags of flaming shit to every fuckbag federal state and local legislator who thinks more guns will make us safer. I’m sure the postal service in its current dire financial state would be happy to facilitate the lighting of the bags of shit upon delivery.

I would have done the same thing, really you would have to be living in an NRA thought bubble to not take any of these threats seriously.

I think the bigger problem is the fact that we feel the need to lock the doors of our schools.
WTF is wrong with us?

So what decision did you have to make?
I don’t see how letting the schools stay open is even an option.

You did right. Now write you congressman, the president and your Governor. Have your son do it was well. Might not make much of a difference, but...
My cousin posted this Wednesday. She’s a teacher and an awesome person...
Just in case you’ve been out of school for awhile... Among our professional development requirements, we are trained - by the police - how to survive school shootings. This includes scattering, barricading, hiding children, and fighting back with “weapons” (scissors, books, glue sticks, etc.). We will not go down without a fight, we say. I will go first, I promise them. We analyze active shooter footage. We watch people get shot so we know how to respond if someone enters our school. We practice these skills and then train with our students, and we do intruder drills JUST AS OFTEN as we take practice state tests. We train our kids to ignore fire alarms unless they smell smoke. A classic intruder technique, we say. We will not be tricked, I encourage. In case you want to know what it’s like to be a teacher or a kid in US schools these days. We train to fight for our lives because we are what’s known as “soft targets”. I think about school shootings every single day... when I push a buzzer to walk through our security door. When I walk through my classroom door that must remain locked at all times. When I hear a kid scream or laugh too loud, or when I hear a loud bang from somewhere in the school. So blame guns or the mentally ill or whatever you want, but we are over here learning that our desks are not bullet proof but our doors are. Standard teacher training.

I’d have done the same thing. And I can tell you that the pro second amendment house I grew up in would have kept me home when I was a kid too. Nothing your kid might learn at school today is worth that risk.
Frankly this makes ME want to take the day off and do something peaceful like go to the aquarium. sigh....

I’m a veteran High School teacher, and here is my opinion:
Threats are always fake. The car ride to school will be more dangerous than sitting through class.
Your kid has a greater chance of dying from the flu than from a school shooter.
Creating an environment of fear and paranoia is about the worst thing you can do right now. If I have to start taking my shoes off, going through metal detectors, or entertaining the idea of my co-workers being armed, I might need to find a new profession.

This is fucked up. Some shithead kid at my best bro’s school, Liberty High School in Osceola County, Florida, is planning on shooting up the school and he’s legit, he has guns for real if you look at his Instagram. He’s that one fucked up type kid, if you know what I mean. I told my bro to not step anywhere close to that school and he told his teachers and stuff. That motherfucking white supremacist-trained asswipe who deserves a lifetime of torture seems to have inspired the other asswipes in the world like him at high schools to fo the same shit. I’m saying this from a high schooler perspective because I see the different types of people.

I remember when bomb threats were the common thing, and I’m not sure they ever happened in reality, but school would be delayed while they searched the school.
I can’t believe shootings in schools are a reality.

Yesterday my criminal justice professor encouraged the class to brain storm for ideas to make the campus more secure. I didn’t realize that two students in my class had already been working on just that, for their capstone project. The campus has a lot of insecurities that we are hoping to address with the College Board of Trustees. The truth is, nothing will eliminate the threat before it happens, but the results can be mitigated through various means.

You have to do whatever you think is best. I don’t have kids, and my opinion might be 100% different if I did, but I would send them. If I was a kid, I’d want to go. Life isn’t worth living in fear. Last year, my wife and I went to France just after the attacks in Paris and walked around the city without fear. Maybe a heightened sense of awareness, but not fear. We simply can’t let terrorist assholes domestic and abroad win.

The usps wouldn’t be in its financial state if it wasn’t required to increase its pension funding from 20 years to cover 75 years into the future. That rule was written with the help of lobbyists backed by FedEx and ups.
Otherwise, the Usps is actually very cash flow positive

That’s a really tough call. I probably would keep my girls home too. I know how vulnerable schools are.
I’ve deliberately avoided coverage of the event. Knowing it happened, and keeps happening is enough for me, and I really can’t let myself go down that path mentally.

You’re right, unless you have a kid you can’t imagine what it’s like making decisions like this. Also, no you wouldn’t want to go to school. My kid has never done anything but celebrate when he has a day off from school. It’s like winning the lottery, no matter the reason.

There was a thwarted potential mass shooting up in Everett a day before the parkland shooting.
My wife and I have several years before our twins are in school, but we’re going to give New Zealand a serious look if this country can’t figure out how to deal with this shit. We already qualify to emigrate there from worth and education/occupation merits.

You say fear, others say prudent security measures.
You’re projecting a mentality of fear where it may or may not exist, but a rational decision to heighten security is being made. Yes, slippery slope, nobody wants to go through metal detectors and armed guards to get into a school, but parents don’t want to sit and do nothing about it.

I suspect the school is being kept open partially for posturing. It sends a message to all kids that they can’t just shut down our schools with terror. Schools are sacred places that should not submit to defiling by a bad apple, and the increased security shows that they are able to adapt.
Whether the parents actually send their kids to school is another story, and I suspect the school administration is fully expecting large student absences.
