“Our transmissions go to 13"
Almost.

Just throw a CVT in it and call it a day.

This [original] story is terrible and misleading. They had zero intention of building and deploying a 13 speed, if it was even something that’s feasible, it was that they ran simulations of optimal number of gears for its size and power. They didn’t even say that 13 was a good number of ratios, just that they tried it.
They might have also tried fins in the CFD simulations but that doesn’t mean they seriously considered adding fins.

That’s my assumption too. At what point are the gear ratios so closely spaced that it’s essentially a CVT anyway?

Point taken. My friend “considered” gender reassignment surgery until he saw how long the lines are to the ladies’ room at concerts and sporting events.

Are you the CEO of Nissan?

So that’s two better than 11?

I dislike CVTs.
But my Can Am 1000 has one and it has withstanded everything a bad owner could do.
In the fight for efficiency it will become a necessary evil oncr it’s perfected

I’m only kidding of course - - every Nissan (and Subaru) I’ve driven the last few years has had a CVT, and I hate them.
They probably are the wave of the future though - -

It’s much better for it to be “essentially” a CVT than to be an actual one, just because it’s possible (if you’re really crafty) to design for upshifts under power with zero slip. A CVT is a certain tiny percentage in slip all the time, and remains limited in power handling.
Aside from number of moving parts, having a bazillion gears gets you the advantages of a CVT with fewer drawbacks. And the number of moving parts thing has the offset that you can potentially get four times the gears for double the parts, etc.

maybe one day when CVT’s can actually handle torque they will.

Well... Yeah. Much like the auto vs DSG debate.
