I’m not a fan of license plate relocation, or front plates in general, but after getting pulled over twice in a couple days (first my wife, then me..for the second time in 6 months) I got the message that front plate laws are now being enforced. I guess it’s better than drilling into the bumper.

well yeah, isn’t Texas Tuff On Crime (TM)? :p
I thought cars came with front brackets pre-installed in states that require them. I can see the holes pre-made in your picture. So you don’t have to drill any holes in the bumper :o)

It’s all fun until a WRX (with tow hook mounted front plate) spins into a snow bank & has to take forever to remove the plate then put tow hook in to get pulledout. I despise tow hook plates after a winter track day.

I’m not in an front plate state but the ISF hadn’t one because it was in one. Ended up ordering a inverted Japanese style plate to cover it.

I’m glad they didn’t enforce it for the 3 years I lived in Texas.

Huh, every winter event I have ever been to has required tow hooks installed front and rear to pass tech.

Those are for Japanese plates.

It’s weird. Nothing...nothing...and then bam bam bam.

This looks pretty easy to take back off honestly. Just need a 3/4” wrench.
Trust me I’m not a fan either, and I don’t like the rice-y look, but this seemed least permanent.

I remember some years ago some lunatic on here was wondering about fighting about a front plate ticket in court and using the reasoning that drilling holes in the front bumper reduces the structural integrity of it and thus makes the vehicle unsafe. I don’t remember who it was, or what the outcome was, but I can’t imagine it went in their favour.
In any case, I think your placement looks great. If I bought a car here and moved to any other province, I’d probably do something similar.

These How hook mounted plate brackets are available for my car too. I haven’t looked at the bumper behind the OEM plate mounting tumor, but if the damage isn’t bad there I might have to get one of theses. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-gmg-motorsports-parts/no-holes-license-plate-bracket/g-bmw45/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA2Y_UBRCGARIsALglqQ1PRnKulmBsJGtC10yUsMvzEGffaWvfsCgEgBOw49rgBzkDlpnD06QaAi9BEALw_wcB

Lol im sure that was just internet tough guy/funny talk.
I don’t like the rice-y look of it but I don’t really hate it; it’s the best option of what I had. I wish it was less expensive though.

I don’t know, it was a pretty longwinded post about it.
Hey, it’s cheaper than accumulating tickets.

Also when I went to pick up my plates, they put the back one on and then put the front plate in the passenger seat. Texas is weird. ¯\_()_/¯

Bumpers are now plastic. They are covers that go over the actual ‘bumper’. If you look for unpainted replacement bumpers, youll find them for $60 for remarkably pricey cars. (Most audi for example) so if your worried about svrewing up the car, get one and pay a body guy $200 to paint it. Cause thats what the used lot will do when they buy your car at auction. Use it and screw it up with intercooler holes or light mounts, etc. Then put the good one back on when selling on .

Long winded post about something inane.
Yup, sounds like oppo.
![]() 02/14/2018 at 20:59 |

Yes, but some of the idiots on here are serious about the inane stuff they post. I mean, hey, passion, but some people are off the rails.
![]() 02/14/2018 at 21:03 |

Yeah, but they’re our off-the-rails people. It wouldn’t be oppo without them.

DPS or local PD?
![]() 02/14/2018 at 21:10 |

Local. No tickets or anything though. I’ve done a lot of highway with no issue.

You know your bumper is already drilled for the factory plate mount right? $30 on Amazon and the plate goes on a factory mount right in the middle.

See this is what I was looking for...impatience and frustration got the best of me.
But also the holes are there but not threaded, so it’s still basically have to tap the screws. Idk, too late now haha
![]() 02/14/2018 at 21:37 |

The kit comes with self taping screws. If you are lucky you may have the bracket that came with the car hidden away somewhere in the truck or something.

The rare occasions where I get pulled over for no front plate (twice in four years) I’ve said it’s because I don’t have holes drilled. Which is true, I don’t have holes drilled. Nor would I ever. Luckily the cops didn’t seem to care much
![]() 02/14/2018 at 21:47 |

Sorry to hear that. Front plates suck. I live in a front plate state, but the cops don’t seem to care much. They’ve mentioned it twice in four years, but no tickets (I always said I didn’t have holes drilled)

I’ve been recommending these guys for everyone (not just Mustangs). I see no reason that it wouldn’t work on a WRX.
http://ccmustangbrackets.com/product/universal-front-license-plate-bracket/
I have one of their brackets on my car, and haven’t been driving with a plate on for a long time. I keep it in the car with the plan that if I get pulled over I’ll just apologize, claim to have not put it back after being on the track (or at the car wash, whichever is most reasonable), and put it on in front of the cop.

Incorrect, the bumper is drilled with holes spaced for a Japanese plate, there are 2 small divots where you can drill for a North American plate.
An adapter like this one is what’s needed:
![]() 02/14/2018 at 23:11 |
|
The holes that are there are spaced for a Japanese plate, the adapter mentioned earlier won’t work. This one will: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01EKVUJC8/ref=pd_aw_sim_263_2/146-5129458-6360409?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=4WKHYSY375BR0335D9H9&dpPl=1&dpID=61WBe%2BaNOfL
I didn’t want to drill holes in my bumper either and bought a cheaper plate adapter than the one I just linked. I mounted it using a pair of rubber well nuts in the bumper to avoid threading anything through the plastic.
Amusingly, my cheaper option broke and I’ll be buying the above adapter as soon as I feel like mounting my front plate again. It’s currently sitting beside the passenger seat and has been for 2 months. :)

You must be around Austin, everywhere around here seems to be targeting my Passat for the same thing.

why is having a front plate seen as being bad?

Lol I wish. I’m in Houston.

It’s not bad per se. I just like how the car looks without one. But the laws the law.
