I’ve been berating my friend for topping up the screenwash in her car and dropping the cap down into the engine bay.
With prices on eBay all random I phoned the nearest Honda dealership and ordered the part, turns out it’s only £4.20 so no biggy.
First look at it, I said, ‘really, this is it? No retaining strap?’.
The guy said, ‘ye’, give me a minute’.
Then came back with some tubing.
He said to ‘attach the tube to the nubbin under the cap, so when you pop the cap off you won’t lose it again’.
I’ve pretty much always known the caps to be like.
Come on Honda, Is that how your doing screenwash caps for a 2016 Honda Civic.

normally caps with tubes are used as a gauge to see how much is left
i just forget wich car i had that had that, either my protege5 or the sx4
It had a little hole in the cap that you block the air with your finger to see the level in the tube.

TIL the term Screenwash.
So much more elegant than the American “Windshield Wash Fluid”
I’m adopting it.

It varies.
It can be windscreen wash, screen wash or screenwash.
That and windshields are called windscreens here.

I usually look at the clear tube.
Looking at these pictures to find one to post, I’m shocked to see how many engine bays are so grubby.
Yuck.

Those bottles are so puny and expensive looking. Us Americans buy “screenwash” in gallon jugs for $1.99 at WallyWorld.

We do gallon size over here (well just over at 5 litres (UK gallon is 4.5 litres, not the U.S. 3.8 litres)).
I always buy the recommended by manufacturer one for VW/Skoda/SEAT/Audi which is £7-9 a litre.
and dilute it so 2:1 for summer or 1:1 for winter use with de-ironised water. I never use tap water for the car unless it’s washing it. But I do have a 0ppm water filter for rinsing if I’m washing the car in the summer and don’t want to risk waterspots.

I’ve never seen any caps like that

Like the Honda one?
I think I’ll put the Honda one on the car on Friday when I go to wash the car but I’ll look to see if I can find a better way of retaining it than a tube attached to it.

I’ve just looked. There are two holes in the cap. One off centre and one right in the middle, so like you side I guess you can put your finger over the hole and lift the cap and see how much is in there or strength.

On the other hand, I squirt some washing up liquid in when I top up the reservoir. Lasts the best part of a year.

Holy balls, you pay £7-9 a liter for washer fluid? That seems like an awful waste of money. I usually pick up some from the local auto store for ~$2/US gallon. Even if I was to buy it from the BMW dealer, it’s $5/US gallon.

I can get it from work for £2 for five litres but I only use the recommended by manufacturer products on the car.
It’s not so bad but my neighbour’s daughter does a lot of driving and uses about two litres a fortnight-month. It got expensive-ish but then I bought her some new wipes after all the abuse they got over winter.

I get using manufacturer parts & fluids for big, or even small stuff, but washer fluid? It’s just water and methanol. There is no good reason to be paying that much for it. The cheap stuff does the exact same job exactly as well for 94% less money.

I take your point but I’m happy doing it this way.
Cheers though.

Yeah I’ve always seen the ones that are attached so that you can’t lose it. Maybe you could rig something up with a zip tie or a clamp of some kind.

I’ll have a look for something with a similar diameter top that would fit.
Something like the one below. I could use the screw that holds the windscreen washer tube to the front wing.

That seems like a great idea!
