Found this old clip from years ago, when my family still had our Ford Flex and took it up Pike’s Peak in Colorado Springs. The Garmin unit was probably outdated even when we had it hardwired into the then-new Flex in late 2008. Hard to believe we got that car almost 10 years ago.
We got stopped on the way back down ant the brake-temperature station and had to wait 45 minutes for them to cool because my dad decided not to put the car in low. Fun times.
Photo from the dealer we traded the Flex in at once they added it to their inventory.

I just drove right through... No one stopped me and the car seemed fine...

I warned him, but did he listen to me? Oh no, he, “Oh it’s just a harmless little hill, isn’t it?”

‘Brake temperature station’!?
I never knew those three words were ever used in that order outside of a factory test facility.
Saying that, most of us over here drive manuals and would use our gears for braking.

They stop you halfway down and take the temp of your brakes with a special thermometer that looks like a metal detector. If they’re too hot, you gotta pull over and let them cool and get checked again.
Ours were VERY hot because he left the car in drive and rode the brakes all the way down.

You also probably don’t have those giant gravel ramps for the trucks (lorries or bigger) to run off the road and stop safely in an emergency. They’re all over the Rockies, and some in the East depending on the grade. Pretty scary, but rarely used.
I’ve gone down a mountain in 4th gear and watched my engine temp drop to idle over 10-15 minutes as the internal combustion just turned into a giant air compressor. Engine braking is beautiful.

I’m sure the sm70 family minivan needed new rotors anyway.

We have those. They are called ‘escape lanes, you’ll see a sign every now and then saying, ‘test your brakes’.
The one below is not far from where I am on a long stretch (50 miles) of accents and descents between Newcastle and Carlisle.
