Here is my ultra basic quick check for determining what market a 2018 sedan/liftback is competing in. Just take the price and find the segment (pretty much size classification). With just two things, you’ll have a basic way of telling whether it is a luxury car, premium car, value car and blah blah blah.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Premium Luxury | Luxury | Premium | Upmarket | Value

Entry (Subcompact)

$40k | $33k | $26k | $18k | $14k

Compact

1. $55k | $40k | $33k | $26k | $19k

* Specialty Compact

2. $66k | $55k | $42k | $31k | $22k

Executive (Midsize)

1. $79k | $55k | $42k | $33k | $24k

* Specialty Executive and Flagship (Fullsize)

2. $90k | $77k | $55k | $42k | $29k

Flagship (LWB Fullsize)

$116k | $90k | $72k | $55k | $33k

+Luxe | Luxe | Prm | +Mrkt | Value

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Example 1: If you are buying a $22k Civic then you have a Value Compact, in fact it would be a Good Value Compact since it’s close to the Upmarket benchmark ($26k).

Example 2: You want to know if the Acura RLX is a luxury car. At $55k the RLX would be a Premium Flagship right out of the gate. It would take $77k to make the RLX a solid luxury car at its current size. If it were smaller (Lincoln MKZ sized) then it would be a Luxury Executive Sedan at its current price.

This gets pretty intricate but if you want to pick a sedan/liftback and tell me the US price points then I’ll define it by the benchmark pricing above.

If it’s close to $55k then it would be in the market of Premium Luxury Compact (which would explain a limited and short production run).

A brand new Impreza hatch, in sport trim, runs $23,455.

With the STi appearance bits and bobs, as well as the sport grille, cargo tray and seat back cover, it runs $23,550.

Even the base model Impreza hatch is 5 dollars under the cutoff for upmarket, so the Impreza in general is playing in upmarket vehicle territory.

(I guess this is sort of cheating, but hey, the Impreza is a sedan as well - but I don’t see Impreza sedans flying off the lots like Impreza hatches do.)

The Impreza gets a markup because it’s AWD while all of its competitors are FWD.

In this way, Subaru would be viewed as maximizing a value segment compact rather than offering the minimum amount for an upmarket car.

Now a WRX starts at $26,995 so the base model would be seen as an upmarket vehicle in Subaru’s lineup. However, due to the price being right on the benchmark, you will be inclined to either get the base model for cheaper in order to up the value or pack on options and push it towards being a premium car. Either way, there is an extremely high likelihood that you will NOT accept the base model at its base price.

The relationship of price to perspective.

Indeed, and Subaru gets to mark up their price even more for their AWD system (which actually does an excellent job, even on my BG wagon.)
