I’m thinking of getting a slot car track for my basement. Does anybody know what is good? Seems like HO is the size to get but what brands are good and which to stay away from? Where is a good place to buy some?

Search for a hobby shop near you. There are a couple around me that have some stuff.

I bought a couple tyco sets from the 90’s from eBay and they aren’t great. If I got some new cars they may work better.

Whatever HO size you get, try to find a slot car vs train crossing piece.

Carrera evolution is the set my BIL gave my sons for Christmas, very nice track and great selection of cars. It’s 1:32 scale

The problem I found with a lot of slot car sets is how the power is distributed. When both cars are running off the same power supply there can be a surge of power to your opponent when one lets of the power on their own car. My friends didn’t like it when I would back off my throttle as they were approaching a corner, causing them to get sudden increase in voltage that would have them flying off the track. Real cars don’t work like that, and slot cars shouldn’t either. I was going to redo things with two power supplies and two separate power connections to the track but never got around to it, instead giving the set to my nephew (which I’m sure my sister promptly threw out because it wasn’t new and expensive)

I’ve never pulled the trigger on one, but the 1:32 scale seems to have a lot more options for classic cars.
