Nice original hardware and what looks like original tile. A few years ago I stayed in an early 50s era hotel in Miami with original details like this.

Both bathrooms have original 1950's 10 inch glass tile walls. The house is amazing from a visual standpoint and it’s on a large lot, but the bedrooms are too small, no central a/c, and the heat is in the floor and ceiling via the boiler that’s in a closet in the hall (which smelled like a gas leak) because there’s no basement.

The water meter was in a closet in the unheated garage kept from freezing by a space heater plugged into a power strip.

Yeesh.

Too bad. Sounds like the house suffered from “do it yourself” syndrome.

I really go for old details like that, but as you know, it is a risky game with old houses.

I look for places like that when I travel, but usually strike out. It seems like every older or historic hotel out there has been gutted and modernized at least 2 or 3 times since the 1980s, so that once you’re away from the lobby, you might as well be in a Courtyard Marriott.

You either get something that is cool on the outside and bland on the inside, yeah, or is ill-maintained and original out of the owner being cheap rather than having foresight. In terms of hotels/motels, probably much less of that outside of areas known for mid century themes (like Miami Beach), too.

The Miami place was the latter, but was reasonably clean and still interesting for it.

So did I. It cost too much. Glad I wasn’t paying.
