I keep seeing this car. Last week, I saw the guy getting out, and I said “Nice car.” He looked at me like I was completely out of my mind. But I do like it, is that wrong? It is just so weird.

I’m guessing owners of dented silver 2nd gen Auroras don’t get a ton of compliments about their car.

My dad picked out a lightly used emerald green ‘95 Aurora for my mom, to replace the Oldsmobile that they sold me. She HATED it! And to be fair, it did break constantly.

Aurora was yet another car that made me think GM was going to get their act together. I guess not. Still one of my favorite post-1970 GM cars.

I never liked the 2nd gen Aurora. It was supposed to be the Oldsmobile 88 replacement (called the Antares), but that fell through at the last minute, and it was re-positioned as the new Aurora instead.

The original is the one to have.

Isn’t there a Dutch or German OPPO living in the U.K. that has an Aurora?

EDIT: it was Schaefft back in September 2016 with a purple first gen.

I had a 2001 3.5 green/tan example. Absolutely a great car. Interior was miles ahead of the rest of GM, and the ride/handling mix was great (especially for a front drive car). Ate up highway miles like it was nothing, and the V6 was a very rev-happy engine. Was definitely surprised by the car, and still one of my favorites.

I somewaht liked the design. They reminded me of the transport ships on Hoth in “The Empire Strikes Back”. The rear fog lights were also neat.

Otherwise... Bleh.

Eh... Antares was the Intrigue. It was a 1995 concept for the 1998 model. Aurora was already in production in 1995.

Aurora started its life as the Oldsmobile Tube Car, and took the name from the Cadillac Aurora, which its styling was productionized on the Cadillac Catera.

I remember reading that the Antares name was being thrown around as a possibility for use on the 88 replacement. I think it was Michael Karesh who mentioned it on the TTAC review of the first generation Aurora.

I seem to recall he was at GM in some capacity in the mid to late’90s, which is likely when development was occurring. To be fair though, I’m not completely sure of the validity of his statement.
