Tonight, the Austin Symphony is doing a screening of Jurassic Park while the orchestra performs the score. This is a fun book. Show has been sold out for weeks, and tix are not cheap

I think the Nashville Symphony does this with a couple movies and I really want to go. The coolest I’ve seen advertised is Star Wars.

That would be fun. I’ve always wanted to do one of these.

Have you attended one of these before? I got to see Back to the Future with the Boston Pops a little over a year ago. It was really cool.
EDIT: Oh wait, are you IN the orchestra?

We did SW last fall. That was a highlight of my career. Doing the second Harry Potter movie in April.

Me: Should this music have a key or something?
John Williams: Nah, just sprinkle accidentals everywhere.

Do you get to keep the books?
![]() 02/09/2018 at 16:30 |

Actually, orchestral trumpet music often does not have key signatures.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 16:31 |

Yes, because I’m in the orchestra. But I can’t see the screen from my seat.

You should if you get the chance.

It is cool. Having a lot of fun.

No. I’m sure the are very expensive.

Yes, 3rd trumpet.

My wife brought the kids to something last year (I can’t remember which one it was).
But I appreciate the reminder of something fun to do downtown. And this time of year is a nice counterpoint to, “see ya babe - going to have a blast down Lime Creek again.”

We’re doing the second Harry Potter in April at the PAC. Tix are steep tho.

I don’t know how she took them the first time around - we’re not big spenders like that.
But I didn’t realize until later. After she went I was going to get tickets to something and just decided dinner and a normal movie was cheaper.

O_O
I played trumpet, but only in school. No key signatures would drive me mad.
![]() 02/09/2018 at 18:31 |

But then there’s no key signature to remember. Every altered note is marked.

Well let me say thanks. It’s great that you guys are doing these. It adds a whole new dimension to these films.

Thanks. It is a bit of a challenge though, since the music you hear in the movie theater wasn’t recorded in one two-hour run through. I was 10 years old when Star Wars came out, and I’ve dreamed of playing Williams scores ever since. Now I’ve done Star Wars, Jurassic, and a couple of Harry Potter movies. It’s a rush.

When I was in college they did this for LOTR. I was super bummed I didn’t get to do it, but I’m glad the idea has caught on.
