It sucks.
This is the 2.5 5 cylinder model.
The MXDM yaris with the manual gearbox feels faster, and it’s a lot cheaper. Granted, its a different car... But imagine what the competition does to the passat? A Mazda six blows it away
the engine, at best, feels like it’s breathing through a straw: it will not rev, it will not change down a gear...ever...
The steering wheel has as much resistance as a broken thrustmaster wheel and the steeringwheel does not adjust to my wierd liking of having the seat all the way back but the wheel near me, something every car I’ve been on that has adjustable steeringwheels does.
I was asked by my grandfather if I could pick his up at the dealer and it really, ugh...
This motherfucker deserves nothing more than to be put out to pasture. Its too old, too slow, too expensive for what you get, VW; you’re better than this car.

The warm take is that the 2.5L is one of VW’s more reliable engines, hence its pervasiveness in the VW lineup circa 2007.

“one of VW’s more reliable engines”
High praise

I guess VW thought this was the car Americans were craving. Europe never got it. That 2.5L i5 engine was never available in Europe either, not in anything, unless you count the 300+hp Audi RS engines. The last NA 5 cylinder engine (2.3L VR5) was retired in 2005 or so.

Yea, I’m going to have to pass on the 2.5.
The 2.0 turbo is pretty nice in the new Passat. Steering is ridiculously light, but this can be good in heavy traffic.

A friend of mine has one, a 2.5 SEL Premium. I’ve driven it a few times, but haven’t pushed it hard because he and his toddler were in it and that didn’t seem appropriate, especially when he was queasy from having a little too much to drink. It’s fine for what it is, namely an alternative to the usual Accord/Camry/Altima trio. It has the imposing size and all the toys the middle-management types want in their mid-sized sedan without all that pesky road feel and firm suspension.
Compared to my Mazda5 6MT it isn’t exactly fun to drive, but really it wasn’t meant to be. The materials and noise isolation are better than my car, but for 50% more money they damn well better be. Like my car, I found the drivetrain to be, well, sufficient; not everything needs to accelerate like a bat out of hell, especially not in this class. I like the sound and torque characteristics of the 2.5, and in this vehicle actually preferred it to the 1.8T.
Now if I was buying a mid-sized sedan I’d probably go for the Mazda6 or perhaps the Accord; my friend bought his car before the new Mazda6 came out, and for some reason his wife wouldn’t allow him to buy an Accord. But I’m a more, umm, enthusiastic driver, so the things that appeal to most people in this class are relatively meaningless to me. A manual transmission, a rev-happy engine and a sharp suspension are the things that make me happy, whereas boatloads of space and every electronic toy and safety widget don’t really interest me. This is why I preferred my 5-series over my E-Class even though the E-Class was newer, faster and had more stuff.
The marketing wanks did fine on this car, and they’ve sold a bundle, however, they didn’t aim it at the likes of you and me. It seems like a good deal for what it is, but it’s not my cup of tea...

But Audi’s 5 cyl must br another block, as far as I know this is an over square cast iron NA engine, and I despise it.... The audi block is aluminum and something’s got me thinking it isn’t over squared.

I’m just angry it exists, the NMS passat just degrades the American market... We should’ve gotten the B8....

Its an oversquare 5 cyl... If VW had tried a little bit harder it could’ve been a very nice and revvy 4 cyl... Yeah, its a good engine but it has no reason to be in such a heavy car as the passat

Sadly, there’s a lot of things dumbed-down for the American market. Take the iOS version of The Game of Life. If you have it set to UK English one particular square says that you bought a Picasso. If you have it set to US English the same square says you bought a piece of artwork as if to say that the average American is too stupid to know who Pablo Picasso was . Frigging embarrassing, and the programmers are probably correct.
Better costs more. Unfortunately most Americans wouldn’t appreciate the advantages of the B8 platform and therefore wouldn’t be willing to pay the higher price. Just look at the relative failure in the US market of the model prior to the NMS as a perfect example. For the people that do care there’s the CC. Despite some progress, Americans seem to still desire big, cushy vehicles - just look at all the SUVs and trucks sold every year. Me, I prefer a smaller car, even if that means using the passenger armrest instead of the one on the driver’s seat, and finding that getting my feet around the steering column is a challenge when I’m in full ABU and wearing combat boots . But what can I say - I’m not the typical American consumer.

Yeah, I suppose we get the dumb passat, but I always feel that German car makers made many asumptions about this market that sometimes feel a bit unwarranted or uncalled for, I feel that if companies gave small cars a shot they would rock on your side of the Grande
however, larger cars have a larger margin of profit, so I get where companies are comming from...

I test-drove one of these, not sure which engine it had, but I was struck by how crappy it was dynamically compared with the Golf, and even the Accord.

Well, Honda did surprisingly well bringing the Fit to the US market, and I think the success kind of surprised them. I’m just wondering how the VW Polo or Up! would do in this market if priced competitively.
We no longer get the Mazda2, so the only other things left in that size seem to be the Mitsubishi Mirage and Smart (sort of) and some GM thing I can’t remember, and none seem particularly appealing at their respective price points. Maybe $5/gallon gasoline might have us reconsidering these cars. At least we’re getting back into hatchbacks, but there are still too many small cars with a tacked-on trunk instead of existing in their proper form. If this evolution continues perhaps we’ll get back into small vans as well :P

I’d love it if the US got to see 6 dollar a gallon fuel because I want automakers punished for thinking so shortsightedly and pushing out so many big gas guzzling SUVs
The consumers? Well.... Who buys today a car for a gas price that might only last half of its life?

Americans are notoriously short-sighted.
