Rounding out the saga of my quitting, I didn’t last the whole week. In fact, I only made it one day. Sunday night, I texted my boss (only reliable way to contact him on the weekend) that I had a new opportunity I was going to take, and that I was only able to give one week’s notice. I apologized sincerely. Monday morning came, and... hey, we need to drop these things off in Valdosta, right by the Florida border. (I’m in north Georgia, so about 4 hours away - not too bad compared to what I’m used to) But then we also need you to take this over to Savannah (another 3.5 hours, thanks to a lack of freeways between those cities) and then this other thing is going to Fitzgerald. (I’ve never heard of it before, but it’s another 3 hours from Savannah and 3.5 hours from home)
14 hours of driving, plus about 2.5 hours of loading and unloading, meant that I got home at 11:30 PM after working more than two full shifts. That’s.... fine. Whenever that happens, I get the next day off.
Except for this time.
No, they wanted me in at 7:00 AM again right away to go on an overnight delivery somewhere. That’s what did it for me. Tuesday morning, I told them that there was a misunderstanding and that I wouldn’t be able to finish out the week. It’s not really a lie, either: I was under the incorrect assumption that I wouldn’t be overworked that week. Was it out of spite? Who knows. My best guess is they figured that they could demand more of me than ever, because I was already gone and the worst that could happen is I leave a couple of days early.
Whatever the case, I feel bad for my coworkers but relieved for myself. I’m still just 23, so I can play the young-and-dumb position if it ever comes up in future interviews. I don’t think it was necessarily the right choice, but I also don’t think it was a terrible one.
Here’s a car video for your time:

There’s rules and regulations about how much someone can drove commercially per day. You may have an opportunity for a lawsuit or something on your hands, especially with the following day situation.

A 16-1/2 hour day, followed by them wanting you to report to work less than 8 hours later? Don’t play young and dumb if you’re questioned about this. Play smart, that’s unsafe.

Working that long and having that little time in between is totally a DOT work violation. The limit is supposed to be 14 work hours and at least 10 hours off in between

You can tell anything to anyone, you just have to say it correctly. You really just have to be honest; sounds like you were being overworked, a good manager will understand.
It seems like you end up in really shitty jobs, and this happens more than it should. Any idea on what job you would actually enjoy? Have you thought about maybe going back to school? I know school isn’t for everyone, but you could go to a trade school or something.

You did right, and make sure you write everything down that has happened to you.
On another topic, have we ever had an Atlanta Oppo meet? Seems like we’ve got quite a few in the area

Yeah, I think it’s mainly because I just don’t really have a clue what I want to do. It’s kind of a shot in the dark with every job I’ve taken, and I have liked a few of them a lot. I only quit those due to the pay being so low.

Does that include all work, or just driving? They probably wanted to have me in the warehouse for a few hours before heading out.
In either case, there’s no physical evidence that they wanted me in yesterday, so I can’t really do anything about it.

I don’t believe we have, but there are definitely more than enough of us around here. We could do go-karts and whatnot, or something. This should definitely happen sometime.

I would sit down and figure out what you like to do and what you’re good at and figure out what jobs match up with those. For example, I like to improve things and solve problems, which is one reason I’m an engineer. I’ve also discovered I prefer a fast pace environment, that came from experience.
As much as I like money, I would rather have a life which is why I’m not back in the oilfield. Speaking on the money side, if you’re only in unskilled entry level jobs they’re not going to be well paid. I would try and get yourself some skills that would make you desirable to an employer. Doesn’t have to be college, maybe a trade school, or even some on the job training. I would even recommend looking the manufacturing industry. Talented operators can get paid very nicely, is that going to take a few years, yeah but it could be worth looking into.

There are actually a decent amount in ATL. I’m in Savannah now, but would be interested.
