This is an asphalt parking lot poured this past spring. This is not snow or sleet, that is salt. It is so thick that driving on it created a dust cloud akin to driving on a gravel road in the summer. Worst of all is that the “storm” that they were preparing for missed us and now we aren’t to get any precipitation for a few weeks to wash this crap away.

I get that no one wants their car to rust to dust prematurely. However, the amount of driving I do, I think I will put on a million miles on the odometer before rust has time to set in.

Sure, my car has a little bit of rust here and there, but it’s not causing any danger to structure. If I leave it for a while, I am sure it will but I will run that car into ground before anything falls off due to rust.

Yea, my wife is so opposed to me having a beater truck to drive in the winter since I have a “perfectly good truck in back just sitting there”. This is why, but to her a car is just an appliance to be used, so me storing a nice vehicle in the winter doesn’t make sense.

Sorry. I sort of agree with that logic. What’s the point of buying a truck (that is capable of dealing with inclement weather) and then storing it so it doesn’t deal with inclement weather or it’s side effects

They just salted the ever-loving crap out of the roads in my area yesterday, and we ended up not getting anything.

Cause I already have a beater truck that’s worth maybe $2500. We needed the other truck because my beater was not up to the task of pulling our 24ft boat. I don’t see the sense of selling the beater for maybe a couple grand, it’s not like we are hurting for money.

I did the winter beater back in the vw days, my summer Jetta was lowered and kept clean, and tucked away when the snow came. I picked up a cheap mk2 Jetta to kick around in the winter. It worked great until I started to mod the beater and have more fun with it.

The same fear keeps me from picking up an old trail toyota 4x4..

You may use my post as published evidence that winter beaters are necessary. I won’t even charge anything for my services, I’m just that kind of guy.

My only qualm is that this was 100% unnecessary, and they put enough down in one parking lot to service a medium size town.

And yes, my truck will be mileaged to death before rust can bring her down.

Stupid lawsuit culture making all the salt absolutely necessary. It would be much better to require everyone to have snow tires and then use a bit less. It does seem ridiculous how cars are all a shade of gray in the winter. My first time flying into LAX in winter, I was confused why cars were so much shinier and cleaner. I was like HOLY SHIT people take such good care of cars here!! Then I went back home and realized people were just as lazy, but without salt things stay MUCH cleaner.

Sure if you had a beater all along, it makes sense to use that... However, I don’t subscribe to logic of buying a separate truck just so your new one can sit in a heated garage.

Nothing fun. Daily a 2011 Silverado and have a 2003 Rubicon for nice days. I have a bike too, but since my daughter was born, I haven’t put more than 1k miles on it.

Last year we had something similar. Snow missed us. We got salted to our eye balls and they also declared state of emergency and shut down all highways. Imagine my face when there was no snow on the road but highways were closed....

Kick in the balls came a few days later when officials finally admitted that they didn’t want to flip flop on their state of emergency in case it sprinkled a little snow after all.

I’ve got snow tires and 4x4. I am getting on a highway and a cop will have to catch me if he wants me off the highway from now on. Fuck them official officials.

I can’t wait until that runs off into the local rivers and they become brackish. That is way more salt than needed.

Yeah, I’m in the Chicago area, and you have to drive carefully *before* the storm arrives, because you’ll lose traction due to the layer of salt on the road in some places, I swear...

Yup, had the beater first. I’m tempted to sell my beater truck in order to purchase a beater car, but I keep talking myself out of it since I know everything that’s been done on my truck and what still needs attention.

Wait, so instead of salting the roads to a certain extent you propose that all drivers must have snow tires? Meaning you expect them to spend $2000-1500 for tires for part of the year.

You do realize that there are a ton of drivers out there who don’t bother with insurance? You think they would spend it on tires?

I mean it depends on the part of the country I suppose. In places where it’s consistently winter in the winter, mandatory snow tires is not a bad idea. Sure there would be all of the “GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS ARE EVIL” folks but its a better solution than salt the earth into oblivion. There is also that whole environmental impact from the runoff of that stuff. And I am not saying no salt at all, just using less of it or perhaps finding more environmentally friendly alternatives that might not be as effective.

Sure there are plenty of people who do not purchase the legal amount of insurance necessary but such is the cost of operating a motor vehicle. At least tires would be pretty easy to enforce. Even simpler than enforcing snow tires though could just be enforcing proper tread depth. People with bald tires are most definitely a bigger threat than someone with brand new all seasons.

That’s also the argument for leasing. Get a new car / truck before the old one rusts out.

Also, I find it ironic that some will prefer drive and older, cheaper vehicle, that is more likely to break, and with presumably less safety equipment, during the time that safety and reliability are most important.

Great Clips is GREAT (see what I did there) because you can go to any branch, give them your phone number, and get the same cut. I went to a Great Clips down here, two hours from home, and I got the same cut as I would back home.

I stopped going to chain barbershops after realizing that not one of them could give me a consistent, even buzz haircut. And it’s literally the easiest kind of haircut: same length all over! Now I cut my own hair at home.
