My grandma had one just like this, her last car before she voluntarily stopped driving. She gave it to my uncle, and almost like clockwork, the transmission acted up. Very low mileage car, so he fixed it, still drives it.

How much lower is the top of the rear wheel arch to the ground is the top of the front wheel arch?

It’s the same, or maybe higher. It has HD/cargo coils and KYBs in the back

Fourth Generation - my mistake.
It’s a good car.

Has that affected the ride? I was looking into those springs and my mechanic told me I should stick with the stock springs.

Oh right, the jellybean was third.
It’s a good car now, everything but the engine had to break and be improved first

Yeah it’s stiffer, but it also hasn’t sagged at all. It’s also a wagon. If you have a sedan, that would get uncomfortable. The KYBs also add to the stiffness, it’s still not a bad ride, but it rides best with a 150lbs or so in the back

My dad has had 26 VW vehicles, so we’re experts in bad decisions ;)

I don’t quite understand the hate it seems to get. It has a good amount of torque for what it is, it’s extremely reliable, and it even sounds alright.

It sounds great, it’s fun to rev, and is bulletproof.

Because Ford cheaped out with every component of this car. See my reply to CalzoneGolem

My father had one in an extended cab, 2WD Ranger. It wasn’t enough engine for that thing - the gas pedal was a volume lever. No matter how deftly the 5 speed auto shifted, all you got out of it was noise. We had two early 90s Tauruses with the Vulcan and it was totally adequate for them.

My dad had an ‘04 Ranger Edge SuperCab with the 3.0 Vulcan and the 5 speed manual.
That thing was fun to drive. If you want to get the most out of the engine, the 5 speed manual is mandatory.

Sounds about right. I’m assuming the HDs are much better at preventing this. Where HD/Cargo springs a factory option or is this an aftermarket solution?

So, the answer is “maybe”?

Yeah, it’s had the cargo springs and KYBs for about 120k kms now, and it hasn’t sagged at all. They are Ford springs, so I assume they could’ve been spec’d that way, but this one had them added once the regular springs and shocks had failed. With the KYBs, I don’t know how good it would be with a sedan, I think the extra weight of the wagon is what makes it decent when empty. My dad semi-regularly carries a lot of weight, so he might’ve gone with a lighter duty combo if he didn’t carry that much.
