I could own one. I think I’d prefer my MR2. But I’d be happy enough with an S2k.

And I could be wrong ;)

I need to try driving a less janky one. The one I got on Turo definitely had some rough edges to it. The feeling that I got from the car was that it just was not fun to drive around town at all. It felt as slow as my Miata at that point but the clutch was way more difficult and power was not very linear (it was an AP2). Once you got on it though, then it finally came to life and felt special. But overall it kind of averaged out to the same as my Miata but just a bit more “solid” if that makes sense. Fewer rattles, better interior, and sleeker/more aggressive looks. I didnt like having a power operated top either but that is just nitpicking. The thing that really kills the S2k though for me is just the price, I just cant justify that premium. I can LS swap a Miata or even just buy a C5 for less money and I am sure that would be more fun lol.

If I could pick one car in the entire world that I want a new model of though, it 100% would be the S2k. I would just love to see Honda make another one and see what comes out.

Probably said this before but I’ve driven NC and ND Miatas and they compared favorably to my AP2, except (obvs) on power.

It’s the sports car equivalent of the Tacoma tax.

The thing was for me though was that power was the main thing where the S2k seemed to disappoint. Sure the Honda had more top end actual power, but it was so much less usable that it actually was hard to tell that it was any faster. I think part of the Miata thing is that despite its lack of power on paper, it is geared just right to make it feel alive. Sure this has the downside of running 4k rpms on the highway but thats only a problem with a really droney exhaust. The ND felt just as fast as the S2k though for sure without any of the downsides. That car is just a beast at everything.

I’d really like to try an AP1 though, even though it is even more peaky at least it has more RPMs to play with so I might actually enjoy it more. I could see the thing being though that either version of the S2k is just more of a track focused car. That you really have to use it somewhere other than the street to fully enjoy it.

Don’t forget the 300+ lb difference. I think the rear tire width is also a factor - a stock AP2 won’t break traction on 245 mm width tires unless you’re being very stupid, whereas the NC had 205 mm at the back. It just feels too serious sometimes.

I do love the thing in spite of the warts though.
