That was an issue a few years ago, if I recall correctly, which is one of the reasons why Oppo and the subblogs got dropped from Gawker proper.

I think ChazoBait tried to get one.
Update: He did get one.

I’m hoping to go to the auto show in Calgary in March with some friends. I should totally do a write up of it.

^This. Maybe. *maaaaaaaaybe* you can count your personal blog as a thing you rite for. But please don’t say you “write for oppositelock”. I’m genuinely amazed this place survived after that happened.

Same. Any reasonable person would have gone “you’re pretending to work for us so you can get benefits, so this place is getting deleted”.

I don’t think this would be as much of an issue, it was that someone was trying to get press vehicles.

Right, that was it. But still, it’s part of a larger issue of saying you’re someone you’re actually not.

It’s not just the press vehicles, its the representation issue. Because it was easily linked to Jalopnik, I think people were assuming that Jalopnik’s staff were responsible for whoever was asking about those cars and whatever else got requested. So imagine someone from Oppo asked for these tickets and then a Jalopnik staff member called up for the tickets and they go “Oh, we already gave them to _____. You guys don’t get any more!”
Honestly, I’m still amazed to this day that more consequences didn’t happen and that more trouble didn’t arise. Thankfully it was stopped before something terrible happened (i.e. an uninsured “oppo writer” crashing a press car and damaging property or hurting another person)

Didn’t somebody get a press car or something?

Yup, that was one of the five things Travis did while he was EIC for that week.
