Heaviest and most powerful rocket to date. Can carry the weight of a 737 into orbit. Uses 27 engines I think, and the boosters are supposed to return to land themselves. Arguably at this scale, it would not only be the most capable but also offer the lowest price to move large cargo; of course, if the boosters don’t crash on landing instead.

Every time I see something amazing like highest flight, longest whatever, most powerful rocket, it seems to beat something out of the 1960's. They did all that with freaking slide rulers, paper, and erasers. Some of which had their roots in the 1950's.

Oh you did all this by hand, I’ll just ride this controlled explosion into freaking outer space. I’ll just fly this jet within it’s operating window of 5 mph for 20 some odd hours. Then land blind.

Our accomplishments suck by comparison.

I’m excited. Hope the launch goes well.

Irrational exuberance, right? Mea culpa .

Elon Musk is one of the most exciting things happening in the US right now. We should regard him as a national hero, but the current administration will not, because Elon is smarter than they are and he’s actually concerned about the planet.

I don’t know how this things are measured (it looks like there are various ways to do so), but is this really more “powerful” than the Saturn V? Are we measuring payload capacity, payload to specific orbit, thrust, what?

I think the rating of “most powerful” has to come from payload lift, thrust/weight, etc. It does all come down to how much you can put in orbit.

Also, it has been referred to with , “...in operation” qualifiers

It will be the rocket able to carry the most weight to LEO currently active & flying (assuming it actually flies that is).

It’s less powerful than the Saturn V.

FWIW, the “Heaviest and most powerful rocket to date.” bit isn’t actually true. The Falcon Heavy will be largest and most powerful rocket currently in operation, the Saturn V was bigger and more powerful. It also went from idea to working rocket almost twice as fast as the Falcon Heavy.

Of course, NASA’s budget during the Apollo program was 5 to 9 times higher as a percentage of the federal budget than it is today, so there was a lot of money to throw at the Saturn V.

That makes sense. I wrote an article about the Saturn V a while ago, and I thought it still held the record, at least as far as payload to orbit. However, once the SLS gets going, it will eclipse the Saturn V.

Kinja'd!!!

We stopped caring about space when we “beat” the Russians.

Throw enough money at a problem and you can do just about anything, even with slide rulers and pen and paper.

Keep in mind SpaceX is privately funded.

Looking forward to it! SpaceX has a pretty good record with the Falcon 9 now, so if the Heavy is just it turned bigly, then hopefully the launch will go well! Exciting times for space travel! :)
