Basically just a Neo-Nazi, Holocaust denier is going to be the only Republican running for a congressional seat that no other Republican tries to run for because the district includes a part of Chicago and would almost never go to a Republican. Honestly, they almost never challenge for the seat and they also disavow this guy. There are some other questionable things he’s done, but that’s the gist of it.

Okay, let’s at least be somewhat honest about what is actually going on here. This is a VERY heavily democratic congressional district. There are no actual republicans running because they know they don’t have a chance. This asshole sees it as an easy way to get on the ballot and make a lot of noise. The actual state Republican Party has said they in no way support him or his ideals. As far as I know you can run as anything you want, whether that party supports you or not.
This is not the Republican Party nominating a Nazi in a real race, this is an idiot gaming the system to get headlines.

I think the Ds have successfully managed to get enough of their people to infiltrate the Rs to swing primary elections to the worst possible candidate. (See also: Roy Moore).
At this point, the Ds simply need to nominate somebody that isn’t a total and complete moron, and thus give them a significantly higher chance of winning in the actual election. (See also: Doug Jones).

Illinois is weird in that there are only a small slice of counties that are blue (yet have a large enough population to decide elections). The rest range from “not that bad” to “Confederate Flags and Nazis everywhere”.
Case in point? Our subject person and the crazy Jeanne Ives trying to replace Rauner as Governor. Her platform is literally “Rauner is too moderate”. Yeah, okay...Dude’s pretty conservative on everything aside from Civil Rights, where he’s refreshingly not like the rest of the GOP.
Then she ran her ad. Oh...right...that’s what she meant...

I wouldn’t say there’s many Nazis at all but Confederate flags are everywhere. My roommate (from michigan) said it best, Illinois is the Alabama of the North.

Everytime one of my religious friends says that IMSS shouldn’t pay for abortions I ask them if they were just generous enought pay for their fucking property taxes and income taxes on the church. Or be open to being audited by the SAT.
I bet that big ass cathedral literally built on the site of a destroyed Aztek temple would owe billions of pesos of property taxes if my country didn’t have SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.
You get to not pay taxes, we get to do “inmoral things” thank you very much.
