Wheel color change! I originally bought this in black to see if I liked it... Nope. Black wheels aren’t for me. But it’s a ten pound 15x8 with a clean design so I figured I’d put an old summer tire on and keep it as a backup.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Started with the barrel of the wheel.

One coat, then flipped for the face. Header image is at two coats, I’ll probably do three or four. Here’s a red NA with the same wheels in white. Not bad.... I think Advanti has done limited runs of their storm S1 in white.

Kinja'd!!!

If I decide to get a full set of these wheels, I’ll try to match my rollbar with grey. Advanti has a beautiful grey that looks pretty damn close to my bar’s grey metallic flake. Actually, all of thier colors look good. Titanium is great, and Hyper silver is absolutely gorgeous in person. I love these wheels. Super cheap, lightweight, and can handle abuse. The only reason 6ul’s are more popular in the Miata world is because they have the ideal Miata offset (they were designed solely for Miatas so...) and are offered in widths from 6.5" to 12". But the S1's are very close to the ideal offset, and offered in 7" up to 9" widths.

I’d never think that white pairs well with red but the pictures certainly proved me wrong! It looks great!

That’s a great look! Now you’ve got me shopping for these in a 5x114.3 pattern...

Thank you! I like them, but my next full set is probably going to be me splurging on forged wheels when I sell my business. This might just stay a backup... Quick check shows them in 17x8, 17x9 and 17x10 in 5x114.3

Im guessing that’s too big for the MR2 :/

On a clean car, white seems to go pretty well with primary colors there’s a blue Wrx with white Rpf1's that looks the business. And a yellow rx7 with white Te37's. So good

Come to think of it, white rims must be a pain in the ass to keep clean!

Red over white wheels is such a good look and not one you see very often. Very nice!

I just looked at their catalog, and yes, 17x8 is the smallest they offer :(

I want 15x7, even 15x6.5. Just something light so I can get good steering response and feedback. Grip is whatever... I’m getting sticky tires for autocross so I’d prefer response and feedback while I’m still learning.

I’m looking at Enkei J10s for my MR2 but they’re not even that light at 14.6 lbs each.

White is the perfect color for red cars

Keeping them white for very long may be another matter.

Why not just paint them the color you like if the color change works rather than getting a new set?

Come to the 4x100 side. Looks like there aren’t a lot of good options for 5x114.3 in 15". Basically Rpf1's, heavy “show” wheels, nice, but hard to track down stock wheels and pricey custom stuff. SSR will drill whatever pattern you want, as well as let you choose the offsets, but they ain’t cheap.

I don’t really love the design, and having the same wheel as everyone else would kinda bug me... But at this point I’d probably get the Rpf1's. The difference in weight should be very, very noticeable. 5 pounds at each corner for such a light car is huge.

I only have one wheel. And I’m not great with spraying... There’s no way in hell I could match this wheel’s color to three in the grey I want.

The lightest RPF1s I can find in my bolt pattern are 16x7 @ 13.7 lbs. Only about a pound less per corner vs. the J10s, with the latter costing half as much.

It’s also ~700 lbs heavier than most of the Miatas I see at autocross (~2100 lb Miatas vs my ~2800 lb MR2) so I’m not sure switching to 4x100 hubs would be smart. I’d worry about putting too much stress on wheels intended for something 30% lighter than my car.

Thank you for all the input, I’ve got a much better picture of what to order now...

Yikes, I kinda assumed you could get Rpf1's in just about any size for any offset. Yeah if it’s only a pound per, nevermind!

How about a center lock conversion? One bolt per wheel for added simplicity! I’m sure that’s affordable! *looks online*

Nevermind...

I remember reading that lots of people buying GT3 Porsches get them converted to 5-lug as soon as they find out they need new tires. Center-locks are apparently pretty labor-intensive.

3 quest-chins:

How do you prep the surface for the paint?

How long does it last?

How difficult is it to remove?

1. Literally nothing. You just make sure it’s clean and dust free. This is a brand new never mounted wheel so it took all of three minutes.

2. Depends. If you clean it carefully and don’t drive in areas where branches/brambles/etc. Will scratch them up, should last a while.

3. Super easy to remove. You just peel it off, and it should all stay together as one piece (assuming you cleaned the wheel).

How many cans do you reckon would be needed to do a full set? My winter alloys are getting pretty salt scarred and I’ve always loved white rally wheels.

With three coats on each, Probably three cans, assuming you took the wheels off and did the back/inside too. But at $5 a can I might grab a 4th if you haven’t done much spray can work before

Actual goals. I love white rims, just didn’t feel like dropping close to a grand for wheels this winter. I went with winter rubber only :(

I’ll upgrade at some point, we’ll have matching Miatas.

2 - seems like the sheer amount of cleaning white wheels require due to brake dust, etc. makes white an iffy choice for Plastidip. Would be interested to see how long and well this would hold up.

I am curious about that. My front pads are loud and make a ton of dust, but the rears are a much less aggressive compound and seem to get almost zero brake dust on the wheels

Get some cheap wheels and dip em! It turned out surprisingly well. Only problem is I kind of want to dip the wheels I’m driving around on now... White is really growing on me
