Car companies are trying to create crossovers to increase sales and profits yet only a few of them are taking their compacts and midsize cars and giving them the Crosstrek/Outback treatment.
There’s luxury variants from Volvo, Audi and Mercedes but only one true competitor from VW. These variants are successful, yet there’s no Focus FX4 or Cruze Z71 to challenge the success of what Subaru has capitalized upon.
Why? These variants have to be cheaper than coming up with whole new vechicles. Plus there’s so much more room for higher trims like a Focus FX4 with the ST engine. I’d buy that in a heartbeat!

If the base car doesn’t already have an AWD variant, it doesn’t make sense?

True, but for example the Focus RS has AWD, the platforms seem to support such things

Most do. Just also restyled to look more “sporty” but like “I go kayaking on the weekends” Sporty not, sports car sport.
The Golf alltrac is really the closest but at a higher price point. I think most companies would rather hit a different demographic than try to bear Subaru at their own game.

It’s all about what the market is willing to pay for, and what has the highest profit margins. Right now it seems that “crossovers” have the highest profit margins, which generally means take an existing car (FWD is fine), jack it up a bit, put some plastic body cladding on it, and market it using young people doing outdoorsy stuff. 95%+ of the population won’t have a clue that it doesn’t actually go off-road, and that same percentage of the population won’t ever take it off-road in the first place.
That’s basically what GM and Ford are doing.

I guess my question is why come up with a new design when Subaru has proven that you just need to lift your compact car offering.

Mazda CX3 too. Saw one of those brand new orange ones parked on the street today. Still wish they would have gone with the brighter orange of the concept rather than that pumpkiney orange.

Look at it the other way. Subaru sell the same architecture and driveline in the Impreza, Crosstrek (we call it XV), Levorg and the forthcoming Forester. Then the same architecture in the Legacy and Outback (soon enough)...and you wonder why others don’t do the same thing??? They’d love to but only VW are that close at the moment.

Both Ford and Chevy will have lifted versions of their next Fiesta and spark.
I’d seriously consider a lifted Fiesta ST AWD... Though if rumors are to be believed, I’m better off waiting for an EcoSport ST, which actually could be pretty cool.
The Crosstrek, in fairness, is not very good, though. Looks neat, especially the first-generation’s wheels, but wheezy and with the blasted CVT... Ugh, no thank you.
