I mentioned a while back that my lab mix wasn’t taking well to the presence of a tiny human in the house, and that I’d have to re-home him. Well, even though I convinced myself that he and I hadn’t had the best of relationships over the years, I still got pretty damn choked up when he went to the Oregon Humane society on Tuesday. I’m still in Las Vegas for work, so the Mrs. took him in for his appointment... They accepted him, and I never really got to say goodbye. He was in my life for nearly 10 years, and was a pretty good boy up until he got testy with my daughter.
OHS has an excellent record for adoptions, and they’re a no-kill shelter. I had to wait quite a while to get him in for an appointment- the reason I wasn’t there to take him... He was taken in on Tuesday, and adopted today!
I’ll miss him, and I can’t help but feel like I failed him... but I hope I gave him some great years and a chance at a loving, child-free family who will shower him with affection.
Bye, Satch... :,(

Stupid question but why not keep him outside the house only?

He’s always been an escape artist. There was never a fence constructed that could keep him in a yard. Besides, would you want to live 100% outdoors in Oregon? He was an indoor, curl-up-by-the-space-heater guy his whole life. Other than farm dogs, I’ve always been a bit critical of people who leave their dogs outdoors.

That’s great news. I had to surrender my foster dog (who I had taken care of for 9 months) last week (I was moving so couldn’t keep fostering, and I didn’t feel like I could deal with adopting her permanently). It was very sad (if I foster again, I think I need to set a time limit or something), and even knowing that the rescue would take care of her, I felt like I was having her put down or something.
But late last night, the rescue contacted me to let me know that she had been adopted permanently, so I’m feeling pretty good, and hope she does well with her new person.

fair enough, if he’s an escape artist then
do you get much snow in winter?

Not really, no... pretty much just 11 and a half months of 45 degrees, overcast and drizzling.

At the end of the day you did the best thing by your dog, you should be proud that you done right by Satch.

Hey man, so sorry to hear you had to give your great looking dog away (one of mine does that same resting her head on your leg thing). That must have been a tough choice. I’m glad to hear y’all found a good place for him though.
I recently had daughter (8 weeks old today), and we’ve got 2 muts that we were worried about their interaction with the baby. So far so good, but I do worry about when she becomes mobile and can start grabbing doggy hair/tail/ears.
When did you notice your dog starting to have problems with your kid? if you don’t mind me asking

I had to go back quite a ways to see your original post about this, and then your daughter was 20 lbs, so not just a few months old. My dog took three weeks to be ok with our first kiddo. You’ve given this months. I can’t imagine how tough this decision might have been, but it certainly wasn’t rash, or thoughtless, or without effort. You did right by your family, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

When we first got our pup (admittedly well before kids), I was proactive about pulling her ears and tail and such. Now, our kids could literally climb up her and she wouldn’t care. How does your dog act now if it’s ears get grabbed? If it gets testy, start training now.

Both of the dogs we have were resuces, so they weren’t puppies, but were close to 1-2 years old as best we could tell. We’ve gone through a lot of training with them, and can run our hands all over them without trouble, but haven’t really tried Grabbing. I’ll test that out and start training on that aspect. Thanks for the heads up.
