I’ve been away from home now since last Thursday with my ski trip to Idaho and work trip to Dallas. I’m excited that tomorrow afternoon I’ll finally be home in LA and get to drive my Subaru. It’s exciting to get to go home to my own bed, drive my own car, painstakingly work on changing the wheel bearings on my other car, and enjoy my own traffic as well. Is it sad that I miss Los Angeles traffic? I think more so I’m missing it because I’ve just learned I might be frequenting Dallas quite a bit this year, so I’ll probably end up here more often than home. Anyways, just pumped for the return to normalcy for the weekend although I have had some great food here in Texas. The lead pic from a restaurant bathroom that made me chuckle. Some great Gumbo there so I look forward to going back some day at least.

Completely random thought: did you ever manage to sell that neon?

My dad actually ended up buying it since he needed a car for cheap and he quite liked it. I had a buyer drive four hours for the car and then change his mind. That was real silly, especially since he didn’t seem mad about it. I had fully detailed every issue and he didn’t even give a counter offer. Seemed strange.

I bought one of these for wheel bearings. https://www.amazon.com/23-Piece-Bearing-Adapters-Replacement-Installer/dp/B01FLVOAZI/ref=sr_1_fkmr3_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1517577360&sr=1-1-fkmr3&keywords=orion+wheel+bearing+kit Works great. You still have to figure out a way to press out the hub, I know oreillys rents tools that push against the half shaft to pull out the hub but I kind of feel like cv joints aren’t made to take force in that direction so I didn’t do that. I could be wrong though. But that kit makes it easy as hell to pull the old bearing out and press the new one in without removing the knuckle/trailing arm

That is strange about the buyer. Maybe he just wanted an excuse to get out of the house for the day.
There have been a few times since you posted it that I had just enough money to potentially make the poor decision of buying a 4th car, and I’m not too far from where you were (I’m in Allentown PA). In most of those cases, something brought me back down to earth. Like this week when I found out that I owed a thousand bucks in taxes instead of getting a refund. So I’m glad that the neon found a good home and won’t tempt me anymore.

Well I’m sure my dad would still sell it for $1k no problem, so if you ever want a Neon just hit me up lol. I planned to do more with it but the move just came up so fast that it didn’t work out.

Good to know, but if anything I should probably get rid of a car.

And then buy two more!

As much as I’d love that, the next goal is saving up for a house. I’m just going to have to get by with my Fiat 500 and NA Miata for a while. I’ll manage.

Saving up for a house here in Los Angeles is going to take forever. We need a solid $200k in cash for a down-payment just to get started anywhere. Will be renting for a long time to make that happen! In general once I pay off student loans though it should be a possible savings goal within a few years after that.

That’s a little terrifying. I’m hoping to spend less than 200k on my entire house. If I lived in a place as expensive as L.A. I might just give up on the idea of home ownership.

Well with rent and bills adding up to over $2k a month, I’m not really interested in renting forever! I figure I can save money in the long run by purchasing eventually. Especially with appreciation of land value and such. It will just take longer to become profitable but that’s okay, I love the area enough. At least until giant earthquakes topple everything I suppose.

Oh I totally get that, although even after you buy a house you still have a lot of those bills, plus some new ones. But if I had to save $200k just for a down payment on a house, that’s over 11 years of rent if I’m paying $1,500 a month, plus I’d still have a mortgage payment for decades.
But I guess that’s why I live in PA and not CA.

I can’t even imagine what buying a house in the San Francisco area is like though... Funny though, I have looked in the middle of the desert of California and found that you can buy like 2 bedroom houses for $150k or less. Sure it’s hotter than the surface of the sun there in the summer but I can buy some really good AC and a pool with that leftover money lol.
