As current car sale trends are going, it is clear the full size sedan is on its way out and the crossover is here to stay. It’s unfortunate since there are still some great full size cars out there. Over the past weekend I had a Nissan Maxima that I scored for $15 a day from Enterprise out of Boise, ID and enjoyed quite a bit. It’s decidedly quick, well appointed on the inside, and quite comfortable just cruising down the highway without being super floaty boaty.
And while I’m not a huge fan of the looks, it is far better than some of Nissan’s other offerings. I actually really liked older Maximas in terms of looks, they really did live up to their cheesey 4 door sports car tag line. But either way this car looked classy enough and had all the interior appointments to be interesting and useful. The infotainment worked well, the leather seats were very comfortable, and the dual zone climate worked well. The heat came on really quick and easily filled up the cavernous space in no time. Made for easy transport of my skis and luggage. Wish I could have just driven the car all the way back to LA considering my flight got canceled and I was stuck overnight anyways.
My girlfriend and I have very different temperature preferences lol
Overall, the Maxima was perfect for the trip and showed me that big sedans like this are just great for highway trips. While the ultimate highway cruiser is surely a mini van, these at least get a bit better gas mileage! No way would I want a crossover for the same task at all. But then again, cars like the Chevy Impala/Malibu that I have right now as a rental are just garbage in comparison. GM’s offering reminds me why full size cars are going the way of the do do. It doesn’t help that this one has a cigarette stench but either way the Maxima is just leagues better.
Idaho sure is beautiful!

As a former owner of a 4th gen Maxima, I have to say they are respectably quick compared to their cars of the time but they are absolute boats. I could whip mine around corners, but only because I knew it so well. The ‘06 Mazda 6, and my current ‘04 Solara handle worlds better. Driving a Camry with better handling than a “4DSC” puts things in perspective. Still have a soft spot for them but, screw the new CVT stuff.

That is beautiful. But as a snowboarder who’s only gone up twice, seeing that hill is a massive NOPE. And wow. 90°. Your girlfriend isn’t an octogenarian by any chance, is she?

Yeah it was certainly boaty like all large new cars but it wasn’t so bad. I just liked that I could see pretty well out of it, it only had 2k miles on it, and everything seemed pretty comfortable for the 2.5 hr drive each way. It actually did decently in the snow too thanks to the nearly new tires. Traction control was going haywire but it was manageable.

Haha well she just likes warmth, we are living in Los Angeles for a reason. It was more for comedic effect, it was kind of cold out and had just turned the car on. But after flying for a while, I was just hot and bothered needing some cooler air.
And that was a double black diamond trail so it certainly wasn’t easy lol. Some great snow back there though and it was totally empty so I was enjoying it. Moguls in general tend to be quite different on skiis vs snowboards. I’m all about trying super technical trails, not so much steepness and speed though.

I agree. The maxima is a great road trip car. When these were brand new I grabbed one from National in Seattle and we road tripped up to Vancouver, BC and back. I grab one whenever I see one at the enterprise in DFW as well. Great for cruising between Dallas and San Antonio.

I thought mostly that it was just an okay car until I got in a Malibu of the same year. It’s just a completely different league. The damn GM car still felt like it was from 2006 but with just some makeup on it.
