I got hit. Pretty badly.
We were on the way to a friend’s place, she was driving behind me. I was watching her car in the mirror as I stopped behind a line of cars and I saw the moment she got hit from behind full force.
Fuck.
I received the full force of two cars. The boot lid is gone. Both original LED tail lights. The central body panel has buckled into the boot. The back of my car is no longer watertight so it’s not exactly driveable anymore . I’m absolutely devastated.
My friend’s Mazda she bought a few weeks ago and was so proud of.
And the CR-V that hit it. Apparently her brakes failed and she couldn’t stop. On the street with the widest runoff area you can get . I think s he could and should have safely moved herself off the road instead of into another car but it is what it is.
I’ve never been rear ended before. It had to be in this car. I had barely touched it in weeks. I’ve spend the last month mostly driving my parents’ f ar newer; far less collectable; insured for far more money cars through some of the worst weather we’ve had all year.
So here’s to a better 2019.

Eeeek. Brakes failed? Or oops she wasn’t paying attention? Because yeah, looks like PLENTY of room to not run into someone else. I hope you guys are ok. Take it easy tonight and go get a checkup if you think you need it. I had much less damage to my old car when I was rear-ended but the way my head was turned at impact gave me a headache for a few days. Physics can be pretty intense.

Thanks :) . I was on the brakes so I barely moved, but my friend got shaken up a bit.
We gave the Honda driver a push to help her get off the road. I told her to use the handbrake to stop. (The handbrake which also exists for situations like this). But I think her brakes really weren’t functioning.

It drives fine, even my lights all still work. Thankfully my side and corner body panels are totally unscathed . But I can’t shut the boot anymore.

We pushed her off the road and got her to use the handbrake to stop. It’s possible that her brakes really didn’t work but I was past caring at that point.

I’ll find out within a few days. I’m desperately hoping so.

Ah, if it's just the boot lid and rear bumper, it'll likely be fine, I'd think. Unless you're like me and have a declared value of like $500. I'm not up to date on BMW values.

I’m worried about the middle beam which has buckled into the boot. There’s a lot of structure there. I have it insured for $12k, I ’m hoping that will be enough. Things are very expensive here.

Oh, yeah that sounds structural.
My monthly rate is about $50 for a few notches above state minimum. Insurance is very cheap here.

Mine is around 90AUD/ mo. for comprehensive. I hope I’ll be entitled to a rental car at least.

Oh no! Glad you’re all ok! You and your friend should s till get a check up just to be safe. And possibly a lawyer, just to make sure you get what you’re owed.
If it’s not distracted driving, I’m guessing lack of maintenance caused the brake failure. But that’s for insurance (or police?) t o figure out.

that sucks. unfortunately I think it will be a write-off.
this is how I know... happened earlier this year, hit by a P-plater in a Hilux. Repair cost was over 16 grand (insured of course).

Damn, that’s almost identical panel for panel! The Honda driver was a P plater too.
Did you get it fixed?

Same thing happened to me at the end of 2005. Getting hit like that is no joke.
> AMGtech - now with more recalls!
12/30/2018 at 02:39 | 1 |
There was no injury or damage necessitating a police report. The cause is pretty much irrelevant to me. I’ve given my insurance company the details of both drivers for them to chase up however they like. At least being the first car means a pretty clear case of no fault for me.
I’d bet on lack of maintenance. Other than the roadworthy check required when a car changes ownership, we don’t have any other compulsory inspections at any point, like in the UK and the states.
And while I like having one less thing to worry about, I see way too many cars that are in no condition to be safely on the road. I think a mandatory, very basic inspection of tyres, brakes, and general wheel balance, that can be done in one afternoon every year would be worthwhile for safety. But s adly I know that a system like that can never exist in this country without becoming rigid and bureaucratised to the point of being a nightmare for enthusiasts, and devastating for lower income families.

yes I did get it fixed. the repair job is immaculate. In hindsight maybe I should have just got paid out since I was insured for more than it’s worth and I bought an Accord Euro for daily duties so it barely gets driven

i think about 6 weeks. I was in no rush as they gave me a new 5 series GT as a loaner. I went through a shop called PanelOne in Sydney. My mate is a manager there.

Good luck friend! Crossing of fingers!
Was the shunt mostly damaging to the rear trunk lip? I assume it didn’t get far enough in to affect any subframes, etc if there were any
? (I don’t know my BMWs well)

There’s almost always symptoms prior to failure and almost never complete lots of breaking force though. But stranger things have happened.

Actually it happened on the 23rd. Just didn’t get to posting it until the 24th.
I haven’t looked very seriously yet. I’m probably gonna find out near the end of next week whether they will repair it or cut me a cheque and for how much.
Basically it will be something with 4 doors, in hatchback or wagon form. And most likely FWD with a manual... unless I come across a great deal on a Prius.
