Santa brought me a Thrustmaster TX, and today I finally got chance to set it up. Initial testing is highly positive, although after messing around with a Xbox one controller for so long I’m basically learning to drive all over again.
My computer is setup in the spare bedroom, so aesthetics aren’t a super high priority. Having to take the drawer out of my desk to mount the wheel was expected. With the pedals pushed back against the box and wall and an extra chair from the kitchen table, this set up works okay for now. I really like my rolling desk chair, but it rapidly became apparent it wasn’t going to work with the wheel. The feeling reminded me a lot of driving a street car on a racetrack, wherein the steering wheel is also being used to help hold you in place.
I think the answer I’m looking for is probably !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :
Not too scarily expensive, and looks easy enough to move aside when I’m not “racing.” Any Oppos have experience in this department? I see the appeal in more dedicated cockpit setups, but I feel like I should probably factor in that most of the time spent on my computer is actually Oppoing and reading stuff instead of gaming. If I had to, um, lower my desk a bit to make my monitor at the right level, I’d probably be willing to do that to my old, cheap desk.

I literally just got myself a playseat challenge for Christmas and it’s still in the box in the car. Micro Center had them pretty cheap. I just haven’t yet cleaned up the contractor mess from the stove install so I haven’t had a chance to break it out.

Cool. Let me know how you like it, as it will probably be a little while before I buy something.

I’ve been years using various homemade stands, bought ones etc. I got a Playseat (the other model they have not pictured) this year and I say this, don’t hesitate, get it. It greatly enhances the experience, and for me makes it e asier since it’s the position I’m used to driving in. If you have the space for the other one I’d recommend it, The seat folds down and the seat/wheel sections come apart for easier storage if need be. I found one on ebay, picked up I paid $140.

After my logitech wheel shit out I gave up on racing sims since a good replacement wheel would cost way more than I wanted to spend; some day I may come back to it and I suspect I’ll end up buying a stand like is pictured rather than building a thing which takes up half the room.

Looks as janky as my current setup, I love it!

I was going to build a rig, and it would have been nice. The downside is weight and storage, both are not issues with the Playseat. Plus it stays where the kids now play video games in the basement so it can’t be in the way...but it’s not too terribly hard to hide.

How badly in the way is the post that goes on to hold the wheel? I’ve never used one of these but that’s been my concern from looking at them. Looks like it would interfere with the legs a bit.

you can offset it when you mount it to avoid issues. It’s not optimal, but it’s not an issue for me, especially not using the clutch. I could use it that way though it’s j ust I don’t have the manual add on stick . If I had one complaint it’s the pedal mount being at an angle and wide so it has some slight movement, it did not distract me while driving.
My previous wheel was a Logitech G27 with the stick add on. It wasn’t, in my opinion, worth using over doing manual with paddles. The realism wasn’t there with pedal feel (clutch) nor was shifting faster nor more precise. I haven’t tried Thrustmasters option, but may never. Paddles are just better for sim racing
