As much as people have been demanding a Ranger, I’m not understanding the purpose yet. The size isn’t that different from what I can tell, and in Canada, it’s more expensive than an F-150.

I will admit I preferred it when he writing articles as opposed to making videos (even if he was pretending to be Dave Ba rry)

Its purpose is to be a “lifestyle truck” not a workhorse, Seems to be a good overall package for that mission though (even if it is expensive) and it is to try to take sales away from Tacoma/Colorado/Ridgeline that Ford has been missing out on, but with now throwing the Gladiator into the mix let’s see how it does., and we’ll also see how the incentives are in relation to the F150 for people shopping on price.

Have you seen how big full-size pickups are nowadays?

And the new Ranger isn’t actually that much bigger than the old one:  https://oppositelock.kinja.com/lets-whip-out-our-trucks-and-compare-sizes-shall-we-1822103508

I get to whip this out again!

Kinja'd!!!

I have a 2011 NA Ranger like the one shown above (supercab 4x4.) I’ve also had the chance to park it right next to a 2016 (Thai) Ranger and a 2019. The difference in perceived size is IMO due to:

1) the new Ranger’s higher belt line making it look bigger

2) the new Ranger rides a bit higher

3) the new Ranger offers a full crew cab, the NA Ranger never did

4) the new Ranger has a longer nose to fit the I5 diesel.

it still looks and feels significantly smaller than the current F-150.  Yes, it is bigger than the old Ranger, but then again by the late ‘90s the PN150 had grown to straddle the mid-size segment anyway.  It was bigger than the first Ranger in the ‘80s, and a lot bigger than the old Courier.  So even though it’s bigger it still occupies the same slot in the lineup.

Blame the rest of the World for the size of “mid-sized” pickups we have.

Except for the Tacoma, all mid-sized trucks in the US are based on international platforms. This is the size designed for World markets, not specifically the US.

I find it funny people in his Youtube comments were complaining about interior space for the rear passengers on that extra cab, while also complaining it’s too big and has too small a bed.

If you make room for 4 adults, you need a bigger cab and then a smaller bed or it will be too long.

yeah, anyone complaining about the rear seat room in the 2019 is welcome to try to sit in the rear jump seats in my truck. They’re not seats, they’re penance.

I’ll also note that a lot of the PN150's embiggening was through the cab being lengthened for 1998+ regular cab models, the suspension being lifted for 4x4 models, and the fender flares and wider tires on 4x4 models.

A base RWD truck was still quite small.

HAHAHA WTF That is comically small, never knew these kind of small sideways facing seats even existed.

I’ve sat in both, the jump seats are better. Jump seats aren’t comfortable, but at least my knees aren’t in my eyeballs.

This was a thing from the earliest of extended cabs up until maybe the 90's? I think Ford finally did away with them for the new ‘97 F-150's, I’m assuming for safety reasons . There was the choice between a full bench, and jump seats, and IMO for short cab trucks the jump seats are better. Jump seats aren’t really all that comfortable, but you can actually stretch your legs out which helps a lot. Plus there’s a lot more storage space for when you’re not hauling people. Plus plus, it’s fun riding in a truck side ways.

If you want your mind truly blown, park a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee (rated to tow 7200lbs with the Hemi) next to a 2013 Toyota Rav4.

The Jeep is certainly taller, way boxier, but only six inches longer .

I’m so not joking. Rav4: 180L 73W 67H, Jeep WK: 186L 73W 69H.

I remember not blinking an eye back in 1993 with our new Ford Ranger Supercab, as kids and teens sitting back there wasn’t seen as an issue, even for the occasional adult.

Our truck didn’t even have that side hinge, we had to move the front seats forward to get back there.

I still have that truck, and trust me, I honestly can’t fathom trying to sit back there now. It now holds a tool box, life jacket, oars and other misc. sporting good stuff. I can’t think of any person I know right now who could agree to sit back there.

I think I offered once to a co-worker, he called a Uber instead. But you can technically fit 5 adults in my tiny ranger, three on the 40/20/40 flip up front bench seat and two in the rear, all with seat belts.

yeah - didn’t Nissan/Datsun have those sideways facing rear jumpseats for a while too? Great if you were a 7yo kid in the days before child seats, otherwise pretty useless..

it must have been the most miniscule suspension lift ever, at rest I think the front bump stops are at most 2" above the lower control arms

It’s 1.4" between SuperCab 4x2 and 4x4 - 66.3" tall for 4x2, 67.7" for 4x4.

that’s due to the tires, no?  4x4s go t 255/70R-16 (30" diameter,) 4x2s got 225/70R-15 (27" diameter.)

Oh, good catch - and the 2011 brochure I’m reading shows 235/75R15, or about 29" diameter, for the XLT 4x4.

So yeah, that’s where the height’s coming from, it’s all tire.
