Been thinking on a new car again. Thinking a Charger would fit our needs well.

A few I’ve found so far.

Change of Heart:
After talking with the wife last night and whooping on both an EB Mustang and EB F150 in the car, we/I’ve decided that getting rid of the old girl just isn’t in the cards. It’s way too much fun, far too cheap/easy to keep on the road, and we don’t have any payments to take down our budget.
The wife also brought up the fact that with the extra money we have from not making a car payment, I have the option of having work done by someone else when I’m not in the mood to do it myself.
So, my current stable will be my stable for a long while.

We all know you only want a Charger so that you can one day harvest the drivetrain for your van.

Na, be replacing the car which I will likely be giving to my nephew who’s about to get his license.

What are your needs? Chargers and 300s are good.

How about a magnum? More hauling space.

Get one with the 8sp ZF and Uconnect. Where's the linky for the drab green one? Nice color.

Get one with a pentastar. I absolutely love mine in my Durango. Easily one of the best engines in my opinion. Ive considered trading in my Durango for a 300 or a charger AWD.

There is a Chicago dealer that has 300s priced way below MSRP; not sure how legit it is but might be worthwhile to compare against the charger

Mmmm F8 Green. Best color for a non R/T mopar

If my Slant6 ever crapped out, I’d swap in a Pentastar. I think it is the Slant6's modern successor

The 2015+ models should be considerably more reliable. Let me go home and pull up the consumer reports survey results.
I am thinking of test driving a 5.7/ 6.4 charger sometime this week.

The first one is about 3 blocks from work, so I’m planning on checking it out tomorrow after work.
Honestly if I get it with low enough miles, I’m not worried about reliability with the way I maintain my vehicles.

I love F8 Green. I’m very partial to Plum Crazy though, it’s a close tie.

Oh wow, that’d definitely be worth checking out as well.
Thanks!

4.0L V6 would be my candidate for modern Slant6 successor.
Pentastar lacks torque down low, the 4.0L in the vans made them quicker than the Pentastar despite being short 40 hp.

Pentastar is definitely the engine we’ll be going for. Being a daily I don’t want the mileage hit of the V8, plus the Penta is plenty fun when paired with the 8 speed.

Random pic, if I found an F8 Green one cheap it’d be in the driveway already. ;)
I want the 8 speed, I want one without “connectivity” though. In case you haven’t noticed, I can’t stand screens in cars.

Too expensive with too many miles.
Besides, it’s not actually more hauling space “safely” unless you tie everything down, and I have the van for hauling big stuff.
An enclosed trunk is far more useful for us.

Seating for 5-6, big enough to carry a family, good economy for daily use, good sized trunk ( no we don’t want a wagon/hatch ), fun.

Sharing just in case you want to know where owners have reported problems over the years. Black double arrow is good, white down double arrow is bad. Everything else in between. I have found the surveys themselves to be reliable crosss checking with forums on common problems, especially if is a mass produced vehicle. Consider a Chrysler 300 as well.

I love Plum Crazy as well but I fell it to have that color you need a big rumbley V8 to back it up.

I love how the rating changes between the 300 and the Charger. How is one more reliable than the other, they’re the same car?
Either way, from what I’m seeing both are quite reliable driveline- wise and suspension- wise, which would be my main concerns with a new/newer car.
I will definitely consider the 300 as well in my search, thanks for sharing this!

False:
A loud/mean V6 wears it proudly as well.

I would possibly suspect the 6.4 and the Hellcat variants are less reliable than the 3.6 and 5.7 shared with chyrsler? Also people are more lilely to mod a Charger than a 300 could lead to more issues? Although CR users dont come across as the modding crowd. Also it’s based on owners’ responses so higher sales on charger vs 300 means more chances of people facing issues? It’s not averaged out by problems per 1000 vehicles or other methodology. I would always cross check with the forums. Seems infotainment/ electronics/ electrical problems are a bigger concern.

Logic and reason... hrmph. That wagon profile tho!

I owned a 2016 Challenger for awhile, put over 60,000 miles on it in two years. Its essentially a two door Charger, I figure the ownership experience is the same.
I would say that they are excellent vehicles, the only issue I had was the driver’s side front wheel bearing got noisy and needed to be replaced, but that was done under warranty.
Pluses are an honest 30mpg highway with the Pentastar and easily high 20s average, gigantic trunk, very smooth ride, traditional “Big American Car” thickly padded seats and sound deadening, and reasonable performance even from the 6.
Negatives, really not many. I can’t account for how well they would hold up long term, but there doesn’t seem to be anything really egregious that affects them with age. Obviously, the finish quality isn’t what you’d get from a Toyota, but they’re fine from a reliability standpoint and obviously have lots of other good virtues.

Eh, wagons don’t really trip my trigger unless you’re talking old wagons.

This is the kind of real life experience I hoped to hear.
Thanks for the input.

I don’t even know what cars you have anymore....
![]() 12/28/2018 at 10:26 |

yeah, as creaky as my Ranger is getting with advancing miles, it was paid off years ago. and still doesn’t cost me much to keep running; the wheel bearing was the only unexpected repair over about the past year.

As it stands now, we’ve stuck around $800 in the car including buying it, but it has a completely redone driveline, all new suspension/brakes, and fresh paint, so I really can’t complain. The van has around $2k over the last 5 yrs, but that’s the same deal, everything has been gone through driveline/suspension/brakes, so realistically at this point, it’s just random stuff that needs replacing.
