When you’re new engine comes with built in cup holders:

Kinja'd!!!

Was pricing out Mazda 6's for reasons and got a laugh out of this.

Related Question: What is with some manufacturers color options being available only if you get the “tech package”, or the good engine in the top model?

I want a damn basic car with the good drivetrain!

Not sure you should be opening your hood that often on a brand new car....

I want a photo of this, just to send it to people who claim that a hotdog is a sandwich.

I have the same thing on the CX-3. I never know why they did this

Isn’t one the oil fill cap and the other the dipstick, or something like that?

Probably because they think most people that want the higher-end engine are willing to pay for the top model to get it.

Additionally, a higher-end engine may have more additional cost than the trim level would indicate, so the cost of the engine is hidden in the options’ profit margin.

Yeah, but they really look like they can hold a.cup

That’s where the problem comes in for us. We don’t want, nor need, any of the additional crap that comes in the higher packages, so I’d just be paying extra for a bunch of stuff I don’t want.

This whole “package” thing they’ve started is really hindering us on buying a new vehicle.

What we really want is a new Grand Caravan SE ( with the 2nd row bench, because we hate the hassle of captain’s chairs ), but with the GT suspension, wheels, body additions.

There’s more profit in the featured version than the basic unit.

And no-one but an enthusiast is going to pay extra for the top spec driveline in a base level car...and enthusiasts are too rare to be profitable.

And if they offered pickup truck-grade build sheets, pricing would likely be much higher, due to the cost of offering more combinations and maintaining the inventory (and your desired config would likely never exist on a dealer lot anyway).

Your best bet may be to get a GT, then swap the seat?

You should see the cup h olders in my NC M iata. An adequate cup holder inside the engine compartment might be an improvement. Maybe, being next to the engine, it would keep your coffee hot, and infuse it with delicious half-burnt gas f umes.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. I overhear a lot of complaining from non-car people wishing they could have gotten the better motor ( aka faster ) in the lower grade because they could not afford the grade that carried it, or they ( like us ) didn’t want all the extra stuff that came with the better motor.

Seats don’t swap ( even if they did I’d have to get all the seats as the GT has leather instead of cloth ) . Plus I don’t want all the tech that comes with the GT, I literally just want the handling/looks upgrade, so I’d have to completely gut it. I’m not however going to go modifying a brand new vehicle to get what I want, if someone won’t sell me what I want, I’ll just keep buying used.

Honestly, I’ll pay more for exactly the vehicle I want. I’d gladly pay GT price ( or more ) for an SE with GT parts. Even having the option to order exactly what I want without it being stocked on dealer lots would be fine.

I refuse to spend my hard earned money on a vehicle that’s only kinda what I want.

I want a damn basic car with the good drivetrain!

I bought a 2011 Mazda 3 Sedan recently. 4 dr, 5 sp; base model with no key fobs, no cruise control . Great car. Just drove it to San Diego and back. Thing devoured the road, 85 mph, 30 mph. I’ll be interested to see how the mileage is affected by using the AC.
