I know there are some architecture nerds here. I am not one of you, but I’d like to be. This gave me a seizure.
this is just stupid
this house has eczema
and this one has a beer belly

It’s like letting a deep learning AI design homes after being given a sample set of 10,000 different homes.

maybe I just google Mcmansion. its a bleak hellscape.

Thanks for that. It makes the $650,000, 3,400 sq.ft. new construction house I’m finishing up the appraisal for, much less awful. It’s just your typical fake stone/wood composite sided, three car garage, four bed/bath house in suburban N.W. Ohio. It’s a bit pricey, but not out of the ball park for what/where it is.

Every. Single. One.
Mud house meets Cape Cod meets Gothic revival .

Those are all of a consistent design theme.
It’s called “M odern American Schizophrenic".

That’s...not far off from how McMansions are actually designed. The more clashing and contrasting styles and styling cues, the less harmonious it looks, the more expensive people are supposed to think it is.
Until they get up close and see that it has the same fake styrofoam stucco and thin walls as houses a fraction of the price.

That third image is from Indian Ridge Resort - Branson West, MO.... and don’t worry, they’re coming down.

Ah...McMansions. Put a Hummer H2 in the driveway and it’s the perfect symbol for the collapsing American dream. Best buy when the market collapses and they all go into foreclosure - if all you care about is square footage, 2009 was an excellent year for you!

It’s fair to say that Australian McMansions are not much better...but from an architectural perspective, their US counterparts ( as seen here) are heroically nasty.

It amazes me that people can build houses so large and only put in 3-4 bedrooms.

That looks nice and reserved in comparison

People Bragging about square footage is like people bragging about their trucks towing capacity. You’re probably never going to use it, you just want to know you have it

Look, if the toilet flushing in the master bath doesnt echo through my 3 story great room, bounce off my manufactured marble kitchen counters, and ricochet all the way through my foyer - the house doesn't have enough empty space.

my grandparents had a house on the cape, it was big by 1968 standards with 4 bedrooms, but each was only 10 by10. There was a similar house built next door. @10 years ago, the original neighbor passed, they tore down the house, called it “refurbished” increased floorplan by 50% and made it a 3 be droom. I don’t get the point of a giant house, if you can’t have friends over.

Eh, I think a deep neural net (particularly a GAN) could probably design buildings that look way better than these...

For what I have seen when the market collapses, especially in the high end neighborhoods around me in North Carolina, I find the idea of paying more than $100/sq-ft impossible. The mind, frankly, revolts. If I’m paying $650k, it better be for 6,500 square feet.
