Yay, today we gather round to celebrate...my 2005
VW Phaeton reaching 130K miles! No codes, No CELs, all good and h
appy.
And it took the fam to Yosemite for a great family trip. (Who needs an SUV?) This proud son of Ferdinand Piech continues to own the road and provide unsurpassed power and comfort. The 320HP NA V8 engine is a workhorse.
Maintenance, as they said, is not for the faint-hearted or wallet-challenged. Even with the help of many talented friends, t he bill for the year was as follows:
New Tires: $950 at Pep Boys
(Cheap, I know)
Oil changes: (2) $240
Serpentine Belt: $220 (done with a buddy, a true struggle )
Fix central cover air vent: $250 (done carefully with the help of the Phaeton Master - he owns 5 Phaetons!)
Trunk Harness Fix: $320 @ a VW indy shop (Could have been over $1200, so I’m thankful)
Replace Auto Transmission Fluid: $950 @ VW dealership - Was worth it. Tranny is back to normal
So, nearly $3,000 this year . A happy Phaeton with no codes? Priceless!
Merry Xmas, Happy Holidays, Awesome Festivus, Kwanzaa, or whatever floats your boat? What was your end-of-year bill for maintenance?

Probably spent like $3k on the Rover as it needed new bushings.

Sad realization that your Phaeton was cheaper to run this year than my 2013 Volvo with half the miles...

Maintenance and other stuff? About 400 this year. Adding fuel, insurance, and registration? Painful.

That’s a big achievement. Wonder if Turo has one for next time I need to travel ...

I bought 2 summer tires, a brake fluid flush, 1 oil change plus filter, air filter, one suspension part (of which I forgot the English name), an engine mount, coil+plugs and the mid and rear section of the exhaust. Total maybe €600, for most of it outsourced. I only did the coil, plugs and air filter myself. 2000 Peugeot 406 with 340k km. Drove it about 25k this year I guess.

That’s savage.
What all went wrong with the Volvo? I’ve heard they are expensive to repair, but that sounds particularly bad.

My S600 was pretty good this year, but she was in the shop for about a month after I hit a tire on the interstate. The total for that repair was over $9000, but insurance covered all of it. I’m planning on having the ABC valve blocks rebuilt in the spring along with other general maintenance but if I’m not mistaken it’s been over a year since the car has broken down on its own accord. My Lexi(?) have only needed oil changes, (3 total at $46 each) and a gas cap for the LX470 at $35. I also put front tires on the LS430 a week before I totaled it, but the insurance check paid for those so they didn’t really cost me anything. Including my insurance deductibles I wound up paying $1180 or so for my cars this year.

Maintenance was about $2.5 k. I had a shop change the LCA bushings, foam surround on the radiator, a wheel bearing, both tie rod ends, supercharger oil, water pump, coolant flush, brake fluid flush . I did rotors, pads, serpentine belt, belt tensioner and a broken amplifier as well as trans oil and all the oil/filter changes . Not bad for a 15 year old Mini with 200k miles that I drive the shit out of everyday (I drove 30k miles this year ) .

Awesome ride. One of the bosses at work showed me his ‘06, also white and with the executive rear seats (is that what it was called?), and bought at full depreciation.

I think this year my W220 S 600 was somewhere in the $5,000 ballpark. The new radiator fan was about $1,000, so was the transmission reseal, and the ignition system probably came out to about $3,000 in the end.
And she's got a $2,000 date with my tax return for Motor mounts and some oil leaks in the new year. But, driving something that nobody else has, priceless!

Not including the expensive oil changes (how in the world a 6 cylinder uses 9 quarts of oil I’ll never know), new tires (this AWD system eats them very quickly), unexpected costs included needing all new rear brakes (calipers, pads, and rotors) after one of the calipers decided to seize up and utterly fry them. Then, I had my alternator crap out which cost me $1700 for Volvo to replace.

Yikes.
I mean, the recent Volvos do look nice, but that repair bill...
