On my S40, to open the hood, I needed to jam something (the key-fob was the right size) into the interior release, and then go lift the hood to expose the exterior release (the hood didn’t pop on its own). This worked well enough until that time I put the fob on the wrong side of the release and lost it in the dash (luckily screwdriver was handy).
