This is a satellite   image of the largest bi-national conurbation on earth.. the San Diego- Tijuana metropolitan areas... together they’d make the third largest city in North America. I don’t know why I find it so fascinating, but still.. pretty cool. What I don’t find so cool is having so much free time.

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve only been on vacation for like two weeks and my mind is already numbing itself with pointless thoughts that last at most two hours. I wish I had like, circuits or calculous to worry about.

Wanna study graduate-level statistics with me?

You could also pick up a Civilization habit. That’ll make the hours melt away.

Oh don’t get me started again with Civilization.... I used to give back cities to NCPs so that I could conquer them back!

But tell me about statistics, I wanted to take that course next semester, but there was no vacancy when I applied!

Playing Civilization and the like leads to the persistent thought that the US should conquer Baja California because it would increase its territory without meaningfully impacting the size of the land border it would need to defend.

I picked up this textbook on the recommendation of the statisticians I work with:

I got through the first chapter fairly easily, but the second has been harder. My calculus algebra is really rusty, which has been making things a bit hard to follow (though Wolfram Alpha helps). External motivation would be nice! I was able to find a PDF of it on the interwebz without much trouble, either.

It all looks fascinating but very complex

My calc is also rusty, I hope that going through Calc3 prepares me for statistics!

Plus the US navy would wreck us in the Sea of Cortes.

Maybe if California ever becomes independent, Baja joins  into the fun

I’m looking more for understanding how to apply the concepts than a deep understanding of the proofs and such, which makes it a bit easier. But yeah, I’ve forgotten (or never learned)  a lot of the ways to manipulate the exponential function / logarithms algebraically.

I sometimes find it easier to deconstruct from top to bottom rather than building up from the bottom to the top.... but it’s a lot more time consuming.

As for functions, I’m really spoiled by my calculator; I really need to practice a lot more on my own!

Honestly, even if the later ones scare you off, I’d highly recommend finding the PDF and working through the first chapter if you get real bored on break . That one is a very good stand alone first- principles introduction to calculating probabilities, that only requires advanced high school / undergrad familiarity with math notation (e.g. Sigma/pi notation, sets & intersection/union). I found it very fun!

The damn fence though... I honestly think that in twnety years we’re gonna look at it like a tourist attraction
