Kinja'd!!!

I thought I’d depress myself by looking at my automotive spending. How do you stack up?

The gas and insurance payments really illustrate how expensive Vancouver is. Keep in mind, we buy our insurance from a mandatory insurer up to $200K after that is optional on the free market.

Gas: $4,692.51 (keep in mind my employer pays for my commute/work gas, it is not included)

Car Insurance: $7837.90 (vomit)

Car Washes: $598.70

Parts for the Fiesta ST: $4,071.23

Labour/Maintenance on the ST: $2,745.85

Truck parts: $969.83

Kia Forte: $2484.54 (financing it)

Parking: $1135.50

Id rather not no, but if i had to estate.

payments on the BMW: 4000, my minimum is $248/ month but I like to get ahead of the game. I paid 10,800 all expenses included I own a little under 7 now, not bad for 11 months.

Maintenance on BMW: 425. 2 oil changes, one bottle of coolant, spark plugs and igni tion coils

the Cabriolet; 1650 for the car, tax title, reg with lie time collector plates.

Cabriolet parts: Probably about 400+200 in new tools

Insurance: No Idea.

Gas : what?

My DD gets about 18 miles for every gallon of premium it burns.

I. DO. NOT. WANT. TO. KNOW.

Kidding aside though, other than a few hundred bucks on the Pathfinder, it’s just been gas, insurance, payments and some car washes this year.  Not bad for 3 cars.

Insurance: $1311

Payments for the F30: $11561 (but I decided to pay it off at once this year so it’s skewed)

Oh God the thousands and thousands of dollars (I don’t want to know the actual number) I’ve spent on insurance over the years, with nothing to show for it but a new windshield and some paperwork. Wish I could have saved it all instead.

Your insurance bill is insane. I think I paid about $3300 for 3 cars this year - granted, one is a 2000, one is a 2005, and I’ve dropped collision/comprehensive on the Pathfinder.

Gas is high, too- I think I spent maybe $2k on gas, but my mileage driven was down this year.

Insurance, not too bad probably around $2500 for the three cars (MINI, GTI, old XJ6)

Gas, don’t want to know. I run premium in all and the Jag only gets about 13. Gotta see about getting that tuned so it runs properly on 87 ha.

Repairs: $3800 for new passenger floor and related rust repairs in Jag. $800 heater valve and miscellaneous leaks and other repairs in Jag. $600 or so for GTI intake. Nothing broke on the MINI - take that haters!

No Payments!  Everything is paid off as of last fall.

It’s for the CX-3, Forte and ST. The ST is on pleasure use only, but is still costly.

The Dodge is only insured for 3-4 months a year.

Believe it or not it’s actually cheaper than me renting a second spot where I live. And it also includes electricity for plugging a trickle charger, and the storage is climate controlled.

On a surface it does sound silly spending that kind of money on a car where dealers won’t even take for 4 grands, lol.

About $1200 in insurance for nine months (thanks, not living in the GTA!)

$5000 down payment

$2,388 in payments

$750~ in gas

$800~ for winter tires and rims

So... it’s the second most expensive thing I’ve ever spent money on.

$2,000 on insurance

$4,560 on car payments for my wife’s C-Max and my Beetle

I would guess less than $300 in maintenance and repairs for the C- Max and Beetle.

Tires, repairs,  and maintenance for the 996 were probably around $1,200 but I haven’t added it all up.

I usually post up an annual summary on my vehicular expenses, I’ve done so for the past two years:

https://overland.kinja.com/what-it-cost-to-own-an-80-series-year-2-and-another-12-1825508825

https://overland.kinja.com/what-it-cost-to-own-an-80-series-11-months-and-20-000-1794518103

Year one was a ton of baselining, PM, and general bringing things up to snuff on a 20 year old vehicle. Year two was pretty calm and I could enjoy the Cruiser instead of working on it all the time. This year still has some time, and it’s due for new front spindles/wheel bearings. It’s a job I usually do myself and plan on doing myself this spring, but it’s still around $500-800 in parts.

I don’t track car expenditures anymore (it is far better not to know) but between buying the Honda, rebuilding the Alfa’s under-bits, and the Land Rover’s headgaket+... I’m getting it is well tipping into five figures in parts alone.

I think I remember you posting this last year and being astonished at how much your insurance is. IIRC it is just a Canada thing? Because I’m currently insuring five cars, three of them with full coverage, and I’m paying $ 1,740ish per year.

Kinja'd!!! WRXforScience > CarsofFortLangley - Oppo Forever

I went back and I did 20 autox events and 22 trackdays (which doubled my lifetime track time). This was the first year in the past 6 that I’ve done fewer than 30 autox events, and my total 42 days of driving events is actually down from my average.

My plan for next year is to cut my autox down to about 12 events, but I’m already signed up for 20 trackdays as an instructor and I can pick up another dozen if I’m up for them.

I’ve officially made the transition from an autox guy to a track guy, I spent 2018 becoming a coach/instructor with 6 different track groups (I’ve got one more I’m thinking about doing). As an instructor/coach I don’t usually pay any registration fees and I enjoy coaching (it gets rough in the Texas summer heat though).

A set of tires costs me $600 on average, the guys with Corvettes, Mustangs, and Camaros pay $1200-$1800 for the same type of tires. I considered a V8 track car until I ran the numbers on tire costs.

My estimates (could improve these somewhat but all the paperwork is in another state):

Corolla:

Maintenance: $125 (2x oil changes & filter, spark plugs  replacement)

Gas: Oh IDK, $40 fill-ups every third week on average, plus a 3x fill-up road trip and a 5x fill-up road trip, so let’s call it $1, 040

Repairs: $350 for parts to replace FL lower bumper shield, fog light, under-carriage covers.

Insurance: About $1, 100 for the year

Registration: $225

Total: $2,440 for around 10k miles

When my ex-girlfriend drives away with this car in a month or two, I should estimate my overall total cost of ownership / mile.

Chevy Truck:

Purchase: $1, 200

Fuel: $67 for the four months I’ve had it

Insurance: Less than $100 for those four months

Parts: $200 for knock sensor, IAC valve, various junkyard replacements (all small electrical or interior things), fluids.

Registration: $200

Total: $1, 767, let’s call it $1, 800, for about 200 miles, all of which besides about 20 were using the bed either to or from.

Grand Total: $4, 240

This is a bit more than I expected, but less than most other Oppos. I guess I am a bit of a cheapskate*

* tools not included. Tools are assets. Stop asking about my tools. Please.
