We’re out in Denver for Christmas and staying with a family friend. She is in need of a new car and asked for my help finding one. She just turned in her lease on a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and is driving her parent’s spare car while she shops for a replacement. This time she’s looking to buy outright with a budget of around $90,000. She likes the Model S, but with frequent trips to Omaha (she lives in Denver) she isn’t 100% sold on the range of an electric car, and she may want something even more fun. She also loves the F-Type, which she’d want with AWD since it would be her daily and she lives, as I said, in Denver. I suggested a CPO Carrera 4S, which she also likes. Basically, the qualifications are as follows:
-Roughly $90,000
-New or CPO w/ warranty
-Fast/sporty, prefers coupes
-AWD strongly preferred (yeah I know, you can drive a Mustang with snow tires up Everest, but I’m not calling the shots here)
-Wants something “sexy and sophisticated” so no ZO6 or GTR.
We’ll see if this turns out to be another case of someone asking a car enthusiast for help but not actually taking their advice. Either way, she’s probably gonna get something cool.

hi from denver!
as far as the car recs go, i’ve got nothing.

I would have said any Aston Martin V8/ V12 GT model in that budget but since AWD is a requirement...
How about an Audi RS5? or even an R8?
Cant go wrong with an AWD 911 though.

A Miata and an F150

If they’re fixed on the F-Type, snag one in a nice bright color.

New or CPO Cayman GTS if she can drive stick.
With a $90k budget, she can find a 6 speed GTS with enough money on the trunk to get an ‘18 into her budget. CPO will fit very comfortably into that budget.

S-Class coupe?
I don’t think that’s as fun as an F-Type but the “sexy and sophisticated” criteria kinda eliminates the really fun stuff.
Edit: I highly doubt the X6 does though.. looking at people that drive them around here it’s really for plebs

Hello!

Good picks! I’ll have to check on the going rate for a CPO R8

The new E53 AMG coupe with the inline 6 looks pretty good (even though it’s not a 63). Plus they’re all 4matics now. And I’d rather drive this from Denver to Omaha than an F-type.
Starts at $73k so she should be able to get a pretty nice one for $90k.

ok

I’m guessing she would probably go for a CPO 911 over a new Cayman because of the AWD thing, but I’ll ask. But yeah she drives stick.

S5 Sportback?

Maybe. It’s probably a little boaty
but I’ll mention it.

RS5 more likely but good suggestion!

The new NSX hasn’t dropped anywhere near that low yet, has it?

Doubt it

MB E53 AMG Coupe or the Jag. Denver market doesn’t have anything in 80-100k range, 2017+ with low miles other than these (on auto trader). Maybe something older or with more miles, but people that are used to leasing new cars usually don’t go for high miles and old.

TTRS? Legendary awd, totally unique looks, quite sporty

Check on the 2017-2019 Panamera 4. There should be big enough discounts (like $20,0000) that will get them down her price range. It would be a nice car that can do the coupe thing while being usuable since it sounds as if they will only have the one car.

Good thinking!

This would be my choice definitely, but I'm holding out for an E53 wagon (and a winning lotto ticket)

Our roads here are generally m uch worse than Denver, and we have a couple PCA folks that do nothing more than winter tires on their Caymans. (And complain about pothole damage.)
A C4S is definitely a good choice overall, but, it’s the lunatic ‘purists’ and shitty salesmen that spread the ‘AWD’ myth. CPO means she’s into a 991 which uses the same style center differential as mine. Which means it isn’t the old visc style, but the hydraulic multiplate with traction management system descended from the 959.
The default bias is around 5:95 and the peak is probably around 30:70. (Porsche doesn’t provide actual numbers.) So it’s not AWD. It’s “performance AWD.” Provides more grip and traction in changing conditions and track situations. Still a fundamentally RWD design.

Important question: did she think the X6 was sexy and sophisticated, or is she looking for a change of pace?

You and me both.

I think the Jag is a good fit if she wants sexy and sophisticated and with the awd and coupe requirements.

Premium smaller than an x6 fun to drive.
I looking at a couple local Porsche websites. 2-3 year old l ow mile Panamera, or super well equiped Macan . I imagine that would be more fun than an x6 and a bit more practical than an Ftype .
Note I would also love an ftype. drool.
Way under her budget, but “sexy and sophisticated”

Stinger GT2 or maybe a Velar. Sexier than an X6, at least.
![]() 12/22/2018 at 20:46 |

F-type. Gorgeous, sounds good, good street cred and she likes it . Plus Jaguar NEEDS people to buy vehicles that are not the F-pace.
![]() 12/22/2018 at 21:02 |

Shame they dropped the manual, but I still wouldn’t kick it out of my bed.
Think I’d have to pick a blue M2 or even a 4C before the Fa ncy TT though

2 AWD Challengers! Oh, wait. I thought that read “Fa t /Sporty”.
Seriously, though, if I had that budget I doubt if be able to resist the Jaguar. Sure there are better and faster cars, but they ain’t a Jag.

Volvo XC90 (the plug in hybrid version)
Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid

Everything you just said is correct and makes sense, but I’m not buying for me. I may try explaining what you just said to her, but I’m guessing she’ll still want something that says AWD on it.
![]() 12/22/2018 at 22:11 |

No. She wants to be done with mom SUVs (her last few cars including the X6) and into a sporty coupe or possibly sedan.
![]() 12/22/2018 at 22:12 |
|
So do I. I basically said to her “If that’s the kind of car you want, look at that and a 911.”
![]() 12/22/2018 at 22:13 |
|
She’s had a Range Rover but wants to be done with SUVs since she has no need for one. I kind of doubt the Stinger but maybe I’ll mention it.

True
![]() 12/22/2018 at 22:14 |

She’s had several luxury SUVs like that, probably wants something much smaller like a sports car.

2001 Audi allroad with just enough money left over for maintenance and repairs
![]() 12/22/2018 at 22:50 |

Sure, and that’s fine, and frankly a Porsche with AWD will always handle significantly better in virtually all scenarios. But, if she’s expecting it to be good in snow? Cayman. Snow tires. Much better.

Did she like the x6? Could suggest the hybrid 530e X-dri ve. Or the M550i X -drive which is scary quick.
The Lexus RC 350 F Sport AWD i s a decent alternate for the F-type.
Or just the Lexus hybrid LS 500h or LS 500 F Sport. Both are AWS but t he LS just looks great and has that presence like the S- class

Ah, gotcha.
How about a Tesla Model 3? Might be hard finding one for sale, but it would be a fun ride.

The range might be a concern now, but the supercharger infrastructure is being built out. Does the Tesla supercharger map show any planned stations along the route? The Model 3 long range does still look to be slightly less than the Model S, but I bet if she drove one for a month, she'd discover she'd be fine with the range.
