That time I over loaded the snot out of a single axle 6x12 cargo trailer, hooked it up to my ‘05 MRT with bald rear tires , and dragged it from Florida to Oregon through torrential rains, gale force winds, and a freak blizzard . I even had to remove the rear bumper cover to make the weight distributing hitch I had to use fit. The trailer was overloaded enough to chew through 3 tires. All together the rig weighed in at nearly 10,000 pounds.
4 years ago today I was plodding slowly across Texas. I’ve done sketchier things, but 0/10 would do again. A lot has changed in 4 years, and I think my self preservation instinct has kicked in since then.

It's why I drive like an old man now. I think about all the time I could have died, but did not (to my knowledge), so now I'm like, "Yeah, now need to tempt fate no more."

I drove fit-shaced drunk probably 300 times in college. Now I won’t drive at all after more than one. That invincibility feeling goes away quickly.

I did that right up until the night I came on base (when I was a young enlisted man living in the dorms) after a party one night. I got through without trouble but found out every car after me was automatically stopped and DUI checked. That was a close enough call to scare me straight.

I still take spirited drives on curvy roads, and I still speed a lot, but I'm a lot smarter about it now, and a lot more attentive and less reckless.

I’m still pretty dumb, but at least I’m not young any more.
Wait- oh... Shit.

Also you have external reasons to preserve yourself now

You betcha! Was just me, wife and 2 doggos in the Magnum.
The funny thing about the Magnum was I bought it thinking it would be a great hot rod dad car, but I sold it one week before we found out we were pregnant with the first daughter. I was bored with the car, it needed a bunch of work, and we’d been trying for kids forever with no luck.
