Anybody here into license plates? I got these from my mother in law and thought that they look like they are worth something, quick ebay search and they are going for 50-120$. I was wondering should i keep them or try to sell them.

I don’t know anything about NY plates but typically they’re worth money if it’s an identical pair. Now I have no idea if NY had two plates issued back then... keep them if you want to hang them on the wall or put them on a car. eBay is always the best bet.

Hi mate. Have a shop about and get them appraised.

They look like they’ll sell well to people who like New York memorabilia, people who collect items on the World’s Fair as well as people who may have an American car from 1964.

I believe all the NY plates that year were world's fair, so that aspect doesn't make them them more rare but possibly a different market of collectors. To give you an idea on price I paid $200 for a pair of Utah 1941 plates that were in better shape than these. There were a lot less cars in Utah than NY especially in 1941. I imagine you could get $100 for your plates most of the ones you see online won't sell anywhere close to what they are listed at because so many people hoard plates.

I’m good thanks.

I hope your settling in okay to the new place and kids are doing well. Your son won’t be very little anymore, I hope your daughter is doing okay and settled.

The plates are a tri-fector, New York, World’s Fair and 1964.

Keep them safe and if you get time try and contact (no, I will not say ‘reach out’, I hate that saying)some relevant collectors groups.

Assuming NY has a year of manufacture plate scheme, these could be re-used on a period car.  Those programs can add value.  Too bad they aren’t in pairs.  Keep them if you like them, otherwise, someone else can enjoy them and you can enjoy the $.

Thats good to know i didnt even know there was a market for these. I asked my mother in law to give me some plates she had laying around, i moved to NC and here we dont use front plate so i was just going to slap them on the car to remind me of NY.

Clean them with a watered down all purpose cleaner and soft cloth. Then give them a good wax. It’ll greatly slow down any further corrosion and add UV protection reducing the sun damage to the colours.

Oh plates can go for decent money, especially if you have a set. I got my set from an Ebay dealer. I needed tags too so I was confused. If you don’t want them try Ebay. If the state only requires one it could be ok, CA is strict and I needed same year of manufacture, commercial for truck and the tags to make the 51' plates they used for a few years into 52s.

I just found out from my father in law that the one with the JD name is actually a custom plate made by his boss with his wifes and his initials.

Not sure how durable WD40 would be as it’s just a water displaced.

Wax is more durable, easier to apply and cleaner to apply items.

That’s pretty cool, I didn’t know they did that kind of thing back then.

I wonder if the family is still around, and would like to have it.
