I’m shocked by the number of people in the comments trying to argue that Alanis is just being a dumb culturally insensitive American tourist. The safety concerns are legitimate, and the PR is awful. Even if that’s how PR is done in China (i.e. lying and blame passing), if you are bringing in foreign media it’s the PR person’s job to figure out how to make a good impression on them, otherwise what’s the point?

I mean Geely got press like they wanted, but the wrong kind of press.

Geely is spinning it as a PR coup, guaranteed, because that’s really how it rolls in China.
Got your company and plan in front of eveyone’s eyes? 60% done, good enough, have a bonus. Only 60% of the people attended survived? Hey, that’s good enough! Nobody will come back? At least they’re talking about us!
I mean seriously, you cannot even possibly begin to understand Chinese corner-cutting mentality. We order light posts that have to be this steel material, this thickness, no voids, etcetera. We figure they’ll do what they’re told.
What’s delivered is literally pig-iron that is rusting before unload, crumbles to dust when dropped, full of voids, warped, isn’t even the tooling they were provided with, and a company that goes “NO, THIS WHAT YOU ORDERED.

Since this post was shared across multiple Gawker blogs, it’d be my guess that most of those comments are from non-Jalopnik regulars that don’t understand why safety is so paramount in motorsports, and why EVERYTHING about that entire event was sketchy as hell . They just see a white American acting “privile ged” and get outraged, since that’s apparently the thing to do nowadays.

I saw multiple Jalopnik regulars among the early naysayers. Quite unfortunate.

She’s a fine writer and I think she’s nailed it in this instance. Quite what Geely were expecting out of this is... questionable.
However, the response will always be inscruti ably Chinese...oh it wasn't my fault. Funnily enough it's also the response of the average middle American judging by some of today's posts!

My reaction throughout reading that article:

That really was a great article, although I’m still confused about what Geely thought it would gain from inviting Jalopnik.
And screw all the people who think Alanis was just being culturally insensitive - it was her ass on the line, not theirs.

It’s China, but for some reason we want more of their stuff over here.

They did lay out their motorsports program and how it was free, which nobody knew before. That’s a bit of positive press.

Except it sounded a lot like it’s not actually free? Free to sign up, but it sounded like people paid something, and Geely was trying to hide that initially . Granted it’s quite possible that they charge a fee and still lose a ton of money on the program, but it did sound like they weren’t being completely upfront.

Probably depending on how high-ranking your family is.

Quite possibly. If they were doing a lottery, they probably would have just said so, so if it is free it would make sense that they are doing it for people who they want to influence, but someone was at least smart enough that that might come off as shady , so they didn’t say it outright. If so, I’d guess they were more concerned about domestic perception, could easily be one of those things that everyone knows happens, but which you are not supposed to talk about.
