Seems like there is a lot of angst here in the peaceful meadows of Oppoland. I am offering this slow motion video of NHRA cars to ease the suffering with some automotive goodness.

I’m suffering because of my automobile. I just paid to rebuild the transmi$$ion in my 03 Odyssey, only learn that I also need a new axle and a new wheel bearing. And the evap system needs work or else it won’t pass inspection. I like to think of it as a very, very slow restoration of a Japanese classic.

Although I have very little interest in taking my cars to the strip, I love watching drag racing. Same goes for truck/tractor pulling, it’s just so fun to watch.

There’s gotta be a hotter motor you could have swapped in right?

I mean the trans going was my excuse to swap the entire driveline in my van.

How many miles are on your Oddy?

197k. It will turn over 200k after our Christmas drive to VA. It got a donor motor two years ago.

Damn, a motor already before the trans went? That’s crazy.

I got almost 197k miles out of that original transmission. That generation got a deservedly bad rap for horrible transmissions, but Honda eventually sorted it out and I must have gotten one of the better ones.

Guessing you maintained it properly, which likely led to it actually lasting.

Guessing it’s much the same issue Chrysler’s A604 got a bad rep for. People bought them, never maintained the trans, then complained when the trans grenaded at 80k miles. Really? Your unmaintained trans made 80k without maintenance when it should have had the fluid/filter changed 3 times already and you want to complain.

According to the transmission repair guy, w hen Honda moved from the first gen Odyssey, which was based on the Accord, they went to a much heavier vehicle with a six cylinder engine, but kept the same transmission. The greater torque from the bigger engine ripped through the transmissions, and Honda was slow in addressing the problems. By the end of the model run, they finally put a proper transmission in it, and I may have gotten one of those. We never had a lick of trouble with it until it died nearly 200k miles in.
