i’m looking for suggestions. I want to make something simular to the cabinet below. The difficult part is I want to be ablew to open it with touching it with my hands.

option 1: put a pedal on the bottom, but I feel like that has a greater chance of breaking

option 2: put a piston (like what holds your hood open) and a button that releases a latch and lets the door open but that seems conplicated.

what do you guys think?

this is where it will be going:

What about one of the latches like you might find on an older entertainment center door or similar, which you push on and it releases/ejects, then push it closed and it latches back in?

You could also put it on a servo motor and have a proximity sensor nearby but that’s getting unnecessarily complex.

B efore this goes all Rube Goldberg and what not, do you want to close it manually or is this whole thing getting automated?

My initial thought was just a spring loaded catch that pushes it out far enough to tip and you just have to manually push it back.

From experience when working with house fixutres, the least complex it is, the better it will function for you in the long run, and the less money and time you’ll invest in it.

My personal opinion is that you place a simple door hinge (maybe add some rails on the sides, like some drawers have ), and some sort of string so that it doesn’t go over.

Also, perhaps I don’t need to clarify it anymore, but I’m not an engineer yet, what I know I do from working at a realestate developer for two years and change.

yea i can push it back in.  I’m just thinking if i cracked an egg and got it all over my hands i dont want to get the handle all nasty.  i dont know what to use as a spring release though

IR sensor tied to an electric actuator or piston. Sort of like how SUVs have the laser sensor under bumpers. Walk up, foot under cabinet, trips sensor, piston/actuator activates

Move the pivot point and trash can platform up a bit so you can just kick in on the bottom to tip it open. Put a chain at the top so it doesn’t fall open on you.

You know the hardware on drawers where you push the already-closed drawer forward and then it pops out? How about something like that. Just tap it with your knee

Hinges on bottom (obviously), string/chain to limit rotation to your desired angle, and use a spring loaded cabinet latch at the top. Should allow you to push in and it will unlatch and fall open, then push in again to latch. Simple, cheap, and can be actuated with a foot or hip. My first thoughts anyway.

Alternately, I think if the pedal you’re proposing were cantilevered through the back of the door like so it’s be plenty strong:

Rnt they kinda small? I don't know if they would have the power or distance to tip the trash out.

You could just put a cleat on the bottom that you could step on to open it.

Magnetic push latch for the top. Push to close, push again to open. For the tilt mechanism, use hinges on the bottom with a rope and pulley   counterweight  like old-style window sashes.

If you don’t want to go sensor/actuator, there’s also these:

Kinja'd!!!

They don’t have a huge amount of throw, but you could mount them low so that you get a fairly large opening at the top of the cabinet. You’d need to push in to release them, but they might work well and they’re about a buck each. As someone else pointed out, don’t forget the check strap.

You could also use some gas struts, will take a bit of trial and error to get the forces and speeds right. If you mount them near vertical they will provide almost no force when closed - as they transition to horizontal the opening force will move in a direction that causes the cabinet to open and stay open.

Some kind of a spring catch that you can push in with your knee to release, and then close again with your knee. As for how to make that work, I have no earthly idea.

Move the hinge point up a few inches. That way you can push the bottom in with your toes to swing the top out and open.

It takes more depth, to let the very bottom swing in, but it's less complicated.

Or just let the door fall forwards under its own weight, and simply hold it in place with a latch. (This assumes an inherently heavy door that outweighs the contents of the trash can.)

The top image, what if the diagonal brackets have a simple fulcrum at the bottom, slightly to the the rear of the trash can. W ith the center of gravity of the trash can forward it would tip towards you. A chain could limit the travel to angle you desire.

Add a cabinet door release to hold it close.

Then you could just tap with your knee to open it up.

Doesn’t really match with your design, but I might put it on a pivot rather than a hinge, and then have a kickplate at the bottom. Push the bottom in and the top folds out, let go, and it goes back in. Very simple mechanism so you don’t need to worry about it breaking, and properly weighted, I imagine it could be pretty effortless to operate.

I’d probably have it slide out rather than tilt, you ought to be able to spring load with a foot release and put it on rails. I’d be worried about overweighting it on a tilt.

Put the pivot half way down so you push in with your toe. The weight of the bucket and the off center nature should make it want to always go upright.

Any kind of mechanism with the tilt-out container will work differently when the trash is more full vs. less full. I would think a drawer would work better, less dependent on weight. We have one in our kitchen and I can reach under it with my toe to open it. It’s got soft-close rollers under it so it doesn’t slam shut, too.

only concern would be scuffing from shoes and cabinet space behind the trashcan. Should probably add a stop so it can be held in the “out” position.
