After !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on Saturday and seeing his Volvo, I’ve been thinking of the concept of the “Forever Car”. (I didn’t take my truck, but probably should have). What is yours? If you don’t currently have one, what do you think it could be?

Right now it’s my 03 Evo VIII. Owned it since new. It’s fun, fast and rare.

I don’t think there’ll ever be a forever car for me. Cars meet my needs, which will always change. Because for the foreseeable future, I won’t have more than a single car in my garage, so it’ll have to be a jack of some trades.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 14:57 |

Don’t think I have one. I would like it to be the 80...but I don’t think it will be.

uhhhh..... my next one?

You’d be surprised how quickly you can acquire cars.....
![]() 12/17/2018 at 15:00 |

Probably my Sunbird.
It’s silly but I love it and I got such a good deal on it, I don’t see it going anywhere. And with being stored through the winter and only having 56,000 miles, it has a lot of life left.

My ‘86 Daytona TurboZ C/S. It is the only car I own that is not for sale at any price, under any circumstances, period.

I don't see myself ever selling the SLK230K. It's not the best car, but it is the first car I lusted after (when I was five and I didn't know better). Plus it's very comfortable, I think it's aeging very well, sounds great, and it isn't horrible on gas.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 15:04 |

I don’t think I could have a forever car. Same reason I wouldn’t want a forever home. My Needs, interests, and desires are constantly changing. I don’t like the idea of having to accomodate my life to fit some thing, versus the alternative where I exchange various things to fit my life.
Otherwise, Audi TT coupe.

Just over 23.5 years now, hard to believe I was ever 18 (but I can believe I was 9 ), m aybe I was the kind of 18 year old who would buy something like this (pic taken weekend before last):

If I acquire another car within the next two years, I’ll be shocked.

I don’t think my Solstice is going anywhere as long as I can afford the costs. On the books it’s worthless, and she surprisingly doesn’t cost much to keep running, both maintenance and insurance. Plus I’m just paranoid about who might end up buying. As for my Bimmer.... we’ll see about that, if the running costs will kill me.

My Dad’s 109,
I’m probably going to be buried in it after I dig him out of being buried in it. He’s had it since 1988 so it’s technically his forever car at the current moment.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 15:11 |

I thought my Galant VR-4 was my forever car, but I got tired of throwing money at it, plus I don’t want to own two AWD sedans.
I thin the only way I could have a ca r “ forever” is if I built it. like a hotrod, or a Bosoku two things I do want to build someday.
it would also have to be my 3rd or 4th car so i could still rotate out the others and try new things.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 15:12 |

I don’t know. I keep all my cars until they essentially die, or at least become untenable to own. I loved my RX-8, but I suppose that if it was a “forever car”, I’d have replaced the engine and kept it. So, I dunno. but I do miss my Cutlass.

yeah - ditto. I’ve had cars I liked and cars I didn’t. I like to enjoy a vehicle while I can then let it move on. Though if someone offered to give me a 1988 silver 911 SC to keep for ever and a trust fund for mechanic services I wouldn’t decline.

Just got rid of my forever car. One of them, anyway...
My girls named that car Carl. 257,000 miles and four daughters learned to drive in it and took their driving tests in it.

If you had asked me a couple years ago, I would’ve said my Elise, but ever since I moved to Michigan, I’ve found myself enjoying it less and less. I guess crap roads and no corners will do that to you.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 15:47 |

Well, my Sierra will be the closest thing to a “forever car.” I’ve had it for 12 years now, and I intend to keep it until the end of it’s usable life. Unfortunately, life and reality being what they are, that won’t be forever. Eventually it will be too far gone to fix, likely due to rust. I would love it to last long enough to teach my daughters how to drive in it, which is 12 years away for the little one.

An LC70 Wagon is literally the only car you’ll ever need. If and when ICE cars are banned, just convert it to electric.
Change my mind.

By the time I get done paying it off it won’t be worth much because of the miles and I’ll probably want a more practical car. Might as well keep it as a second car then.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 15:57 |

I thought it would be the Tacoma, but it wasn’t. Right now, I’ll pretend it may be the 4Runner, which meets the same criteria as the Taco, except for the pickup truck part of it. Old ass tech? Check. Made in plentiful numbers with large aftermarket? Check. I like it? Check.
My real forever car that I can’t afford, or more appropriately, won’t spend the money on because I don’t believe it’s worth the money currently being asked for them? Either a ‘69 or ‘70 Mustang Mach 1/Boss/etc, some form of fastback Mustang.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 15:57 |

I’ve been lucky to have a few cars that I called “forever cars” in their time with me, but life evolved past them. Think I’ve finally landed on the real one though.

Provided Mercedes-Benz doesn’t take my 2016, my four smarts are my forever cars. Excluding unicorns (roadster, crossblade, diesel, etc), any smart I get from this point will be seen as sorta disposable.
And motorcycles? I’m so deeply invested in all but the Ruckus clone that it’ll take a lot to pry them from me. And for that Ruck, I wouldn’t shed a tear to see that disappear.

This is funny, because I wanted to make this same post, but with the additional questions on the best do-it-all car out there, as in, commute, road trip, camping or what not. I wish I could figure this out, because it would be nice to know.

It’s been an uphill battle dealing with age and rust on my ‘99 F-150, and currently I’m losing. If I can get a place to work on it, and save it before it’s gone I’ll keep that truck forever.
And this bike,
My first bike, nothing all that special, an ‘82 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim, but you can pry this bike out of my cold dead hands. I’ll hang it on a wall, or let it rot in the corner of a shed before I’d ever get rid of it. I’ve had other bikes, and I’ll have lots more, but this one will always stay.

Needs and financial situation change , so I’ll pick the one I have. Why? Paid off. Reliable. Provides transportation for dogs, and allows me to go off road if I need to. Not worth enough to sell or trade, and yearly cost to keep it are low. So, my 2000 Tundra - it should easily last another 100k miles, which at the pace I am using it, is like 10-20 years easy.
The car I want for the rest of my life is a manual transmission Porsche 911 GTS. I think it is - I never drove one, but I feel it is the car I want.

My Camaro. It was my first car and I’ve got way too much time/money/sweat/blood/tears invested in this thing to ever sell it.

I don’t think there will be a “forever” vehicle for me. Longest I’ve owned any vehicle is still six whole years. I wish I could say it would be the longbed, but I doubt it’ll be on the road a decade from now.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 17:09 |

Pretty sure I already have it:
So long as I can keep upgrading the driveline to something with better parts availability ( will be 3.6 penta/6-speed next round ), I can keep the rest of it in good shape as long as I see fit. I can also change it’s personality to fit my wants at the time.
Currently I’m going for a more overland style so we can go even more places than we do already. In the future if I decide I want more handling, I can lower it, and swap on some more street focused wheels.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 17:16 |

When I think “forever” I think:
Quality and well designed, no flaws that piss you off over time, nothing that has to be fixed over and over. When something on it does break it is worth fixing. CHECK
I don’t see my needs outgrowing it. CHECK
I have a shit-ton of good memories around it. I wouldn’t mind the memory of me being associated with it. CHECK

Not a car, but I will probably never get rid of my KLR.
It’s kinda dweeby, handles like crap, and is about as tightly wound as a shoelace. Yet it’s indestructible and I can comfortably flat foot it on the street while also being able to do some trail riding in the woods. It’s also idiot-proof to ride and just doesn’t give two shits about the world around it.
Oh and they have like no resale value soooooo....yeah it’s easy to keep around and worth very little if I sell. Guess I’m stuck with it until I die. Th en my kids might get it.

My XJ. There’s practically nothing on it I haven’t touched, and it’s for a connection to some people dear to me who are no longer living. I’ve had it for 16ish years and I’ve had some good adventures with it. I’ve been neglecting it lately, but hopefully I’ll get a bit more free time in the next year or so. I was DDing it until I bought the Jetta. Now it’s wallowing in the side yard behind the fence again. maybe one day I’ll do an Oppo write-up on it.
I don't see myself ever parting with the Studebaker, either.

I don’t see myself ever parting ways with my z3 coupe. It’s one of my dream cars from when I was a kid and it keeps me connected to that era. I’ve already been through the worst with it when the subframe tore and if the engine ever goes I’ll just swap an m60 or s52 in. It’s such a unique car and fits me so well that I just don’t see myself ever parting with it unless forced by outside circumstances.
I’d love to find a second one someday to make my track slut also because I couldn’t do that to this one. I wanna go full out aero, no interior, solid mounts, etc. and I just couldn’t ever do that to this one

My 2000 S-10. Dad had it new since December 1999 and I took ownership once he got tired of driving a manual.
One day I want to repaint it a bright blue metallic, all LED lighting, and a LS swap >:D
I think its a future classic, you cant get small trucks like this anymore and fuel efficient.. for now.

I’ve always like old cars, and have had some luck/mojo with the old dear. It also wasn’t some rich kid’s toy - this was a $1600 car back in 1995.

Cars like that are attainable, too. Even an immaculate non-6.9 W116 will probably struggle to pass 10K unless it is really something pristine and low mileage.

I really really really want it to be my current car. That was my intent. But I’ve been so unlucky with it in it’s first 8 months with me and it’s hard to overlook those feelings. Still hoping!

I honestly don’t think I’m capable of keeping a car forever. Four years is my personal best and my average is four months...I just like changing cars.

True story! I wince every time I lay eyes on my increasingly rusty rocker panels, but it’s definitely in better shape than most of the GMT-800s around here.
I think I'm going to have the rockers replaced in a couple years, and then bedliner the truck from the bottom of the lower bodyline on down.

I am predicting that sometime in our lifetime, there may come a time where buying a non-self-driving car new would not be possible. Some sort of “grandfather clause” that allows already bought and operating “human-driven” cars to be used. Perhaps there would be some states that would outright ban them or at the very least make insurance/registration extremely cost prohibitive to most people. At that point would be the time to declare a “forever car” for me. Idk what that would be since in this scenario, “track only” cars are probably still allowed anyways. I would probably need something that has a ton of character but also has a ton of compromise for streetability. I am thinking an FD Rx7 but I have never driven one so I cant really know.

As I like to say, mint from far but far from mint. It’s a good survivor, but has patina. The car also needed a little engine work when I bought it. These cars were inexpensive then and are still relatively affordable.
You could pick up 300SL gullwings for well under 10 K in the 70s.
![]() 12/17/2018 at 23:33 |

This is an easy one. Three things I want in a car are that it’s fun to toss around, has a manual transmission and has sliding doors. I fou nd that combination in one vehicle, and chances are pretty good that we’ll never see this collection of attributes in one vehicle again. Sure, I’ll probably add another car to my collection (did someone say Miata?) , but this one isn’t going anywhere.
When the relatives bark at me in 30+ years to give up driving because I’m a doddering old fool, this will be the car they take away from me and none of them will know how to drive it...

It looks a lot better than my Studebaker!
I’d take my money back to the late ‘70s... Big block Corvettes, Shelby Mustangs, hemi Mopars- they were gas guzzling old beaters... Dime a dozen. Just a couple of 300SLs could take care of me and my family for a good while, though.

Bought new in LA, moved to the PNW around 40 years ago. Gentle climate goes a long way. Had it been in rustland (I was in the upper midwest last month, the rust had me in awe), it probably wouldn’t be around now.
Even 25K spent 40-4 5 years ago could build a car portfolio that might enable a young retirement today. You could pick up rare Ferraris under that 10K number as well , like a gullwing, cars that even unrestored can hit 7 figures today .

Nope. I don’t mind that it’s an automatic. It’s super slow, anyway. The 2.0 is rocking all of 96 horsepower. It’s not meant to be fast. Or showy. It’s just an old economy car that happens to be very well preserved.

It’s in hibernation waiting for the space and time to be stripped down to the sheet , but have a representative photo . Mine does not have T-Tops or louvers.
I’m still undecided on wheels. Since it’s tracked, I don’t want to widen 16" pumpers and sand-cast won’t hold up to the lateral.
![]() 12/18/2018 at 11:27 |

Yeah, just as much as maintenance, a car like that needs to live indoors. A couple of winters there would turn a pristine car into maybe a lost cause.

In high school (c. 2000 -ish) my best friend had a ‘79 Mazda pickup that we would bomb around in. The floors were mostly plywood, the seatbelts just had a glob of rust where the attachment points once were a part of the truck, and you could actually see the cab bounce around over rough roads because it was no longer attached to the frame... Yes, we drove it flat out everywhere we went... I don't know how I survived the beaters of my youth.
![]() 12/18/2018 at 13:41 |

Growing up in the PNW and learning to drive in the 90s, I was used to friends having 70s era beaters that were completely sound, if not entirely rust-free.
Funny thing, around here you could probably search for a day and find a solid 79 Mazda PU.
I remember seeing a mid 00s Dodge truck somewhere in south-central MI (I think) that looked completely beyond redemption. I had to wonder how it happened. It was Swiss cheese.

Probably my Ranger would be the candidate. Simple, cheap, and easy to fix. Owned since new; 2010 with only 30000km. It’s modified just right and meets my current needs. I could see myself owning it decades more. But when my needs change in the unknown future I’ll need the luxury of being able to drop it down to second or third car status, and I’m currently struggling to park, drive, and maintain the two cars I have now.
Only time will tell if I can keep it forever.

Even slow, a manual would make it that much more rad.
