I would go to an art supply shop and get a starter set. Nicer than a student set and if it’s a decent place they can answer some questions.

Our kids are still learning on student sets. My niece has moved to the watercolour pencils and is making really nice stuff.

Pastels and charcoal are available too but can be messy to get started with.

I remember looking in Michael's and noticing how damn expensive some things in their pens/pencils/markers isle. They might be a decent place to look.

Michaels is actually a good place to start, as long as you don’t go for the cheap end cap sets intended for little kids.

Amazon is also a good place to shop for starter sets.

My semi pro artist wife prefers Faber-Castell Polychromos. She did like the Prisma color pencils but apparently their quality has been lacking recently . The Faber-Castell are oil based bind er instead of wax and blend much better. They don’t suffer from wax bloom (her words, not m ine), the odd random shiny spots. They are a bit pricey, professional art supplies usually are.

Prismacolor colored pencils are the industry standard for professional artists. Pricey, but the difference between Prismacolor premier and Crayola for artwork is akin to the difference between a D odge C aravan and a McLaren on the track.

Thank you. I think that at the low end, Crayola is the way to go, but we're aiming higher here.

Thank you for that. In the comments about Prismacolor, I’ve been reading about lagging and uneven quality.

Dick Blick Art Supply sells Utrecht pencils with Blick brand. Does your wife have any experience with Utrecht?

My wife is an artist and art teacher and she usually get Prismacolor premier for herself, her students amd our kids. Our kids have a pretty healthy collection of them.

Go to an art supply store to avoid dealing with the nightmare that is Michaels.

What does she like for a sharpener?

Wouldn’t do Michael’s. Amazon or Dick Blick.

What does she like for an appropriate, high quality sharpener?

I’m not an expert on this by any means, but Utre cht was an art store that got bought out by Blick; so I’d imagine they’re the kind of “store brand” . Again I don’t know what the quality is like, just wanted to chime in since I used to live about 100' from a Blick.

Prismacolor ones are definitely good. Someone got me a set Koh-I-Noor Progresso colored pencils   awhile ago and I was really happy with them.

She has a nice heavy, metal sharpener that you can swap blades on. I’ll see of I can track it down.

I'd rather order from Blick than Amazon because not Amazon.

Her primary sharpener: https://www.pencilthings.com/product-p/kum%20104.02.01.htm She says it works best for colored pencils. And if she can’t find it, it is small, she uses a sharp xact o knife, but wouldn’t recommend that for younger children.

Prismacolors. It’s what we were required to get for Architecture school, and they’re the only ones I’ll buy now. They’re excellent.

I hope they will enjoy them as much as I have. Learning to blend colors on paper with the clear pencil is pretty cool.
